I had one person I knew because of them....but not really. Some Manic Street Preachers fans are pretty obsessive, so if it's one of your obsessions it's easier to make a connection (although....I guess living in the UK and especially in Wales is a plus for that sort of connections). |
Well, it's complex. I was on Manics forums for a very long time even though I disliked going on the forums. Also, made a few contacts through LJ, but I only kept one friend from there. I'm definitely not a huge fan now, and I even left the forum. But I remembered how many Manics fans I actually know when an Aspie I know IRL asked me about having many FB friends, it actually takes me a moment to realise a lot of these people are Manics-friends. |

My favorite singer is Cristian Castro. Whenever I mention this, well, sometimes people do say that he has a nice voice, but they're like 'honesty, don't you like someone more cooler?'. He may not exactly be as popular as others, but he has a great voice.

Yes, I guess so. And I guess I'm not terribly different from the rest of you here. As for what it is that I listen to, I am primarily into art music.
As in:
Opera seria from the 1700's, Hindustani and Carnatic music, just about every composer of the classical tradition, from names like Beethoven, to Salieri, Wagner, or Feinberg.
It's like being in an in-group with a secret handshake, but there's only a handful of people in the world you can find that know the handshake, aside from music professors.

Yeah I feel like the only people with similar taste in music to me are middle aged guys. I think some of my tastes are mainsteam like Journey or Genesis, but not for women my age.
I really love music and don't understand why people only like what's hot right now so they can look cool with their friends. I really don't get it. I feel like people think i'm a bit of a freak for liking a variety of music.
Like when someone asks what's the last album you bought and I reply it's Please describe yourself by Dogs die in hot cars. I get a blank look. I don't think that's really an obscure album. |

I love music that conveys despair and alienation. Most people aren't into that, at least people over 25 years old.
I listen to a lot of classical music, particularly 20th century stuff since it feels less structured and more emotional. How many people have this on their ipod/phony? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P0kjFOMhLDE
If I like something and it becomes popular than it becomes really hard for me to enjoy it any more. I liked KT Tunstall but then when she's on the store soundtrack at the Gap ... yuck. It's like I'm allergic to popularity. I hated music that was popular when i was in high school, like Led Zeppelin, but discovered years later that I liked it a lot.
So does my taste in music isolate me? It feels that way. But I think it's because I want to be isolated. |

I do feel that my taste in music isolates me. I either like what older people like (I will happily listen to the music that a colleague likes - she's 6 or only know a few people who like what I do. I've also found that very few people have heard of anything I like.
I remember that when I was around 16 (or maybe slightly younger) I mentioned that I like 10cc. Someone who is quite a bit older than me, (around late 30s / early 40s) gave me a look of  I'm used to that now.
In general, I will listen to absolutely anything. A few years ago, my dad went through my music collection on my computer and said "why on earth do you have songs by Glen Miller?" |

I don't think my mainstream eclectic music tastes isolate me...the fact many people on the local rock scene are music snobs so don't consider you 'one of them' if you listen to music outside of metal/rock does exclude me from the 'rock' sub-culture, as I'm primarily a rocker that's somewhat irritating.

Oh yeah, I really dislike it, in the alternative subculture as well... You have the feeling they're judging what's meant to be 'worthy' listening, and won't listen to anything outside of those boundaries, unless they're stating they're being ironic or whatever. |

| Yeah, it does. All I listen to is shoegaze, ambient and occasionally experimental stuff. I use to listen to more rock and punk stuff but as I've grown older I can only really tolerate those three. Anything else is too loud and energetic or depresses me because I've grown very isolated and anti-social over the years. Loud, "happier" more social music makes me think of the life I lack, I like the quiet droning beauty in bands like Slowdive and My Bloody Valentine. It gives me this really nice feeling inside. |
