Something of a sidenote, but that stuff people say about loud music f***ing up your hearing is entirely true. I'm only 27 and my hearing has been this way for years.

I have probably damaged my hearing a little bit through wearing a Walkman/iPod over the years.

I seem to be worse at understanding speech than you might expect though, given my level of hearing. I can hear quiet sounds as well as anybody.

Does that make any sense?

I have the problem with not recognising faces quite markedly. Is there a similar thing for speech recognition?

I have recently discovered that I happen to have central audio processing disorder, which according to some sources, might happen to be more common amongst Aspies. It explains alot why I have a hard time understanding when people are talking to me, while I otherwise have excellent hearing.

Hi everyone i have same problem While there was some hearing loss, it was still within the normal range. I told the doctor what my family is always telling me, I also have had 2 surgeries on my TMJs so it's possible that that may cause some issues too. hearing aids atlanta

I hear ok in my right ear, volume-wise at least, but it comes through as unconnected sounds -- I have to really concentrate to understand any words. Needless to say, I always put the phone to my left ear. another bit of weirdness with my hearing: I seem to be able to hear conversations from farther away than others can.

out of curiosity, do you hold your pencil with the top pointed towards your shoulder, or away from your shoulder? just curious...

another question- do you know how your ability to tolerate loud sounds compares with your acquaintances who are less acute of hearing? IOW can you tolerate loud noise better then the others or worse than the others?

I never noticed if the pencil or pen points towards my shoulder -- I don't often write things out. Probably more towards my shoulder than not.

I hate loud noises. I startle easily and I'm easy to find in any fire drill -- I'm the one with my fingers firmly wedged in my ears and a klingon scowl on my face.

Yeah, same here, especially when someone speaks to me when I don't expect it. On some level, I hear and understand what they said, but just can't process it mentally.

I always had problems with my ears growing up. I had ear infections constantly as a kid and still get them every few years as an adult. Loud noises hurt, and music with high pitched noises or fast beats make me very agitated. I basically stick to ambient and soft new age music to keep me calm. I can't comprehend speech if I make eye contact with the speaker. I can't comprehend speech when there are other people speaking in the background, including tv or music with lyrics. I had my hearing tested in an attempt to obtain a noise reduction headset when I worked in a call center, and was denied because my hearing was well within normal rage. I tried to explain that it was my brain, not my ears, but they didn't get it. _________________ AQ-32 Aspie-157 NT-39 INFJ BLESSED BE!

the reason i asked that seemingly off the wall question, is that it has been found in a U of W study decades back, that there are general neurological differences in a group of left-handed folk who wrote with their pens pointed away from themselves, traceable to irregularities in the corpus callosum [that thingie that connects/coordinates the left and right hemispheres]. since then, people have been studied to have non-uniform bilateral aural response, who were also found to have corpus callosum issues.

your hearing system's dynamic range [ability to handle soft and loud noises] is shifted towards the sensitive end, meaning you have less "headroom" for the loud stuff. some people have dimished dynamic range on both ends of the volume spectrum, beethoven being a prime example- he was deaf except to loud noises which pained him greatly.

My hearing was fine until I had blocked ears. My hearing then became too sensitive. I then had my ears syringed and still have this problem 2 months later.

I have "selective hearing". Meaning, I hear what I want to hear and can block out the rest. I blame it on AS _________________ I see your lips moving, but all I hear is, oh, look!!! A cat...
