Recently, my friend mentioned how I reminded her of Sheldon from 'The Big Bang Theory'. Prior to this, I had never watched the show due to my lack of interest in American comedy. However after watching two episodes I'm hooked, I'm especially fascinated by Sheldon's character . . . I don't want to be obsessed with the show, but I can't help it.

Is this abnormal? Has anyone else ever experienced this?

Whenever I get an unwanted obsession, I try and ignore it and have nothing to do with it and it eventually goes away if I don't look at it or even look it up and have nothing to do with it.

Sometimes my own obsessions I like having I don't always want it in my head because the it gets distressing. Maybe that is what makes me OCD. :?

World politics and the lack of coverage by "mainstream" media.

Enviroment, economic, peak oil, catastrophic climate change. I'm addicted to the slightest rumor of collapse:

I am currently having this exact problem. My brain is just hooked on this one thing and it is really very distressing that it is following me around every second of the day. It actually began as something that I did find exciting and positive, but I need a break! I really have thought about it as much as I possibly can, and now the same thoughts are just circling.... and circling.... and circling. I am finding it impossible to focus on anything else, other things that are extremely important to me, and they are just falling by the wayside.

Yep. This is me right now. I only have one more week of school before I'm off for an entire month but I just can't let it go. I'm eternally grateful that I don't really need to study for my exams, but I do have a paper I have to finish between today and tomorrow. I wish I could just turn it off for a couple days... Then it could run my life for a while. However, it's hard to compromise with things one cannot control.

It's because you are seeing yourself in him. Happened to me 2.

If you're hooked on TBBT I don't see how that's a bad obsession. I watched all four seasons again after finishing them and concluded that it must be a perfect sitcom! (For geeks, at least.)

Whenever I have strange obsessions, I channel them into something constructive. Like I may think of every single movie I know, or every movie actor I know. I may repeat a name of someone nice, if I think of someone mean, or a nice place, or nice event, or even a name silently in my head over and over all day. That way the obsession changes :P Give it a try I am sure it will work!

My main obsession is one that is causing me trouble at the moment. It's making me so depressed and even though I'm addicted to it, I wish I wasn't so obsessed, if that makes sense. At the moment it's not an enjoyable experience. I am doing the research and making lists because I feel like I have to, not because I want to. I'm hoping that eventually I will start to enjoy it again.

I also get obsessed with death from time to time, which can be a pretty big problem.

I get that lots about people. I try not to think of them, but can't help it. And get scared whenever I see them.

Hmm. It isn't a bad obsession, but it doesn't encourage me to do anything productive. My obsessions change so often that I begin to question whether they are worth it.

I can totally relate to being obsessed with a TV show (once I started watching TBBT I couldn't stop ... though I can relate to that show so I don't consider it an "unwanted" obsession). The worst was 24, I couldn't stop watching that, and felt relieved when it ended. Chuck was another one I just couldn't get away from, though I had mixed feelings when it ended earlier this year.

My coworkers are always trying to get me to watch whatever show they are hooked on, but I try to minimize shows I try, for fear of being drawn in. Once I get obsessed, it's like I feel compelled to watch each episode in order without missing one. Sometimes it does feel "unwanted" in that sense.

It was worse when I was in high school: I had a strict TV schedule that I didn't like to deviate from (I'd wait anxiously for the TV guide each week, and plan accordingly). This caused some friction with my family, since they just wanted to sit down and find something to watch right there and then. I still plan my TV viewing now, just with fewer shows (thankfully technology now allows me to easily get caught up if I "miss" a show).

I have experienced this before. The obsession I have now is one I don't mind having, but the obsession I had a few years ago was one I knew deep down I didn't really want, and looking back I feel really embarrassed about it now.
