I know I posted this before, but it's bothering me. I'm not mad, I said d*mmit in a light hearted way to show that I was frustrated but not so frustrated that I was angry.

Anyway, it's really hard to read the forum now because it's not like it was last month, because the arrows come and go and the globes don't change colors.

Seriously, I have rebooted and everything and no settings have changed, what can I do? Is it the software that's doing it with internet explorer? I've heard people say that ie is hard to work with, but I don't like Safari. You can merge this with the other thread if you want, but I'm really frustrated and want it back the way it was, so if there is something I can do, let me know. Maybe the computer guy can look at his thing about the website and see if something is messed up that would be effecting it that way, please?

I can, and am dealing with it the way it is, but I like things to stay the same unless I change them on purpose. Wink

Do you mean these arrows, as shown for your post here in this forum?

Yes! They used to show up on every thread that I hadn't read. I could go to say "General" and there could be 7 arrows and I'd read a thread and then go back to the forum and there were 6 arrows. The only way to get rid of them was to either mark all topics read or read each one. Now I don't have any. Occasionally, I'll open a forum and see some arrows but after I read one thread and go back, they are all gone, even the ones I haven't read. It's just hard to keep up with which ones to look at without the arrows. I don't know what happened. I guess I could open Safari and see if they are working there, so I'll know if it's the computer or the browser.

Also, the globes by each forum would turn white when there were new posts. Now they mainly stay dark. Sometimes one or lots will turn white but once I go to one forum and go back to the index, they are all dark again.

I hope my explination is making sense. I'll open Safari and see what it does there and post back to let you know.

OK, it did the same thing on Safari. I logged in, went to general and came back to the index. I waited a few minutes and went back to general and there was one arrow. I did not open that thread, and I went back to the index. I went right back to general and the arrow was gone, even though I had not read that thread.

They used to show me threads with unread posts in them unless I marked them read. That's what I'm wanting to happen again. Any clue whats wrong and how I can fix it? It must be my computer unless it's happening to other people too. The only thing different from when I was here before is my modem, and I wouldn't think that would change anything like that, would it?

Well, we can see they're being generated Ok by WP (if they weren't then I wouldn't see them either) so that's one potential failure out of the way.
It won't be a computer problem/fault making then vanish for you, so it's something to do with the browser,
With me running Firefox they're still there if I leave and then return to a forum.

So you're not seeing them with both IE and Safari?

Right. IE and Safari are both doing it. I see them at first sometimes. This thread had one just now. But if I were to leave this forum without reading it and go to the index and then come back, it would be gone. Basically, it used to show me consistantly which threads had unread posts in them but now it's only showing me which threads have new posts since my last visit to that particular forum and it's not always doing that.

I'm literally imagining you as Brian the dog sitting at the computer with your ears up and your head tilted and frowning as you think what could be wrong, right now. If you ever change your avatar I'll cry. Then again, you'll always be Brian the dog to me. Smile

This would be Firefox, as on your earlier installation before it was upgraded, or was that also IE or Safari?

Ooh I don't intend changing it, ever. Shocked

I have always had IE. Years ago when our only computer was my daughter's fiance's (then just her boyfriend) he had Firefox for a while but that's the only time I've ever used it. There's nothing that's been changed on my computer except this new modem. My computer is emachines if that helps. Don't laugh, we wanted something and didn't have a lot of money to spend on it, it suits our purposes Wink I don't know why Safari is on here. I don't know if it came with it or if my daughter put it on here for something to do with her ipod or what.

I don't wear those slippers anyway, but no table scraps for you tonight, nor a martini!

I'm getting the same problem too. I can open one WP forum and sometimes it shows all the other threads in other forums as being read too. The little graphic at the side of forums on the index screen is also a waste of space. It is totally inaccurate and I just ignore it. It seems pot luck if it shows forums as read or not read.

Thank God it's not just me! I'm sorry you're having trouble too TallyMan, but I thought for sure it was my computer or something. It worked completely fine before I was offline for a month. We got a new modem at the first of April and it wouldn't work right and it was just a nightmare to get fixed. We got replacement modems from them in the mail, he talked to tech support several times, tried all sorts of stuff and finally they sent a guy out on Monday and he fixed it in ten minutes. It was something in the wall in the phone jack. He took the plate off and did something to the wires and it worked. Odd, that same jack was where the other modem was plugged into. There was nothing in the instructions about that, and tech support said nothing about it. They did charge him $150 to come out and do that though, so I'm wondering if it's set up that way.

Anyway, has it just started being unreliable the last month or has it always been like that? It was pretty reliable for me up until now.

I used to get the "everything is read when it isn't" problem quite a lot in the past, but not recently
Blue arrows very much here for me.

Well I've just logged in this morning and apparently I've already visited every forum and read every thread because none of the forum or thread 'highlight' images is showing. All are the dull 'read' image.

I think the site might be doing this automatically as a cleanup action on more or less regular intervals. I've seen it happen before, and IIRC it was most commonly around midnightish.

If that's what's happening, then they should start showing up again for posts that are newer than the cleanup/reset thing.

I just tested it out on my computer. They're showing up normally on Chrome, but I tried going on IE and all the flags disappeared.

Shocked
