While there have been countless icons, mascots, and characters with real depth and background and everything else, there are some games that allow the player to write their own stories, or at the very least customize basic things about the characters. Most tend to fall in the realm of RPGs, like Elder Scrolls or Fallout or Mass Effect, but there are others like Saints Row that do this as well.

So what I want to ask is what kind of characters have you made? What all unique experiences or journeys have you had? Ones you'e particularly hated or loved? Any specific details to share?

I'm working on a project to create a bunch of athletes, politicians, historical figures, and other famous names who irritate me in Fight Night and procede to beat the tar out of them.

Only drawback is that I can't make female characters in that game. Oh well, there are more than enough male ones that fit the bill.

I usually make magic-y characters, almost always females. Back when I use to play WoW I favored orcs, undead and blood elves since I liked them in the game, then switched to a human female mage.

Nowadays I just try to make a character as aesthetically appealing to me. I was going to make a effeminate male for Guild Wars 2 but character creation disappointed me there. The females on the other hand...

For me it depends on the game and how in depth the creation system is :
Fallout 3/NV on console probably have the lamest as everyone pretty much always looks the same no matter what you do, so I don't usually bother.. Usually Caucasian, Female, Wendy the welder hair.
Fallout 3/NV for PC somewhat fixes this with a few mods but It still usually takes no more then 5 mins.

Skyrim - I didn't really like the creation system again I felt Humans/Elves just looked lame no matter what you tried to do with them which really put me off playing anything other then Khajit or Ardonian.

Saints Row however excels and I think game designers should take note. (Especially when it comes to changing mid game/whenever you want)
On this I've made too many people,(sometimes spending hours to get them just right) usually characters from other games from Donkey Kong to Duke Nukem. Tho sometimes I just mess around, I think if I load it up i'm currently a English transvestite midget called Lawrence.

I've never really developed back stories or anything for made characters tho like some people do, but I think this is due to wanting to shoot stuff I might try is one day tho.

Only female characters in MMOs and RPGs. And I make sure they are good looking as always.

Yeah, this totally killed me. I don't get people who make their characters as ugly and hideous as possible, unless they have this neat, uniform appearance. Like, if I was playing a 40k mmo I wouldn't mind playing a chaos space marine because he would have armor, look good, maybe a few mutations etc. Seems like everyone I know who plays mmo's just want to make ugly as hell characters who are "funny" looking. Its cute at first but it gets REALLY old. WoW is especially frustrating because I like the horde factions a lot lore wise but the models are so damned FUGLY. The game is very stylish but oh my god playing an orc warlock for so long just broke me. Everytime I tried to race change my friend would b***h and moan at me over it. Hell, I don't like female blood elves either because they look like crack whores. I'm pretty much done with WoW and typical MMOs though.

For a girl character she has to be cute, no big sultry lips or tons of makeup. This is a complaint I have with many mmos and video games in general: You can only be Muscleberg man with sliders only changing how big and thick you are or you can play as a hardfaced Victoria secret model. I don't want that. Its a make believe game, let me be a whispy, anorexic male necromancer or a cute female spell caster with looks that make her seem like she belongs on a Disney channel sictom. I know that sounds creepy but its how I am and I hate it when video games force human characters to be ugly, especially the females. Yes I know we're all not perfect in real life, hell if I am, but if I play a game its for escape. Let me be the pretty butterfly I want to be. Especially since I'm going to be starring at that back end for hours...like in WoW's case Confused

I would always argue with my ex-friend about how awful the WoW horde models were, especially trolls, to which he made the counterpoint: OH IT GIVES THEM PERSONALITY!!! Arghhhh. fine sure. I don't care if orcs, trolls, undead and cow men are ugly..but fix their damn posture and horrible clipping issues. As it stands the only tolerable horde models for me are male undead and blood elves. I use to like tauren. I switched alliance a year ago just to be human. Trolls and orcs are cool..but god they look awful in the game.

Other races in other mmo's are cool too, but 90% of the time they are just rehashes of orc archtypes. Like, if a Starcraft mmo was ever made I would eagerly play a zerg or protoss. Never happening though. All I play in games are humans anymore.

Sorry for the long rant. Here's another shot of my female elementalist from the GW2 beta to make up for it:

I like playing female characters.
I generally go for the stealthy Thief/Assassin type, hiding in the shadows, avoiding combat if possible and knifing or shooting others in the back if they represent a large threat.

I like making strong looking charcters...just seems right for action/adventure/RPG games. In games like Bomberman though I make goofy characters.

I usually make my characters a bigger race, like taurens in WoW.

To NeueZiel: i completely agree with you about Horde! Ugly as all get out. I played a female tauren for years until my guild finally switched to alliance where I got to play a worgen. Now that might not seem like that great of a switch but for me, after playing tauren, orcs and trolls, getting to play a werewolf (my fav "horror" type since childhood) was an awesome change. Immediately the other people in the guild wanted to go back to horde. All guys who wanted to play the "tougher looking" races. I don't know why the hell Blizz didn't make the tauren women look more like the dranaei women in the first place, I wouldn't have minded playing a cow if she wasn't eight feet tall and thick as a linebacker. /rant off Wink

Going to start a new topic sort of similar to this one - more specifically about what types of gameplay people gravitate towards.

Cheers!

I mostly play as women in video games, and I usually model them after anime original characters I've created. Too bad that not many RPG games allow one to reshape a human's ears to pointy ones which would fit one of my OC's. Saints Row 3 had this though, and it was amazing.

But when I tried to create a female elf in Dragon Age: Origins, their faces almost always end up ugly somehow... it's really bothering.
And don't make me mention the modelling of the elves in Dragon Age 2, even though one cannot create an elven character in that game.

When I played WoW, I only had two Horde characters, and three or more Alliance characters. This was because my brother, who got me into it back then, was in the Alliance. He asked me and my sister to join him, and so we did.
At first, I had two female Dark Elves (Druid and Hunter) before I created a female human Paladin. I literally fell in love with my Paladin, and played her as much as possible. Laughing

I refuse to play games without character customization. I enjoyed Saints Row 3 because of it's many customization options. If there's anyone interested in an MMO with character creation I highly suggest Tera.
