Despite these rather radical views I do believe in trying to work with other parties where possible to accomplish common goals. For instance, although I believe that ultimately socialism will be necessary for an ecologically sustainable economy, in the short term I'd be willing to work with liberals in order bring in a carbon tax and other environmental measures. And I'd cooperate with just about anyone in opposing social conservatism. |
+1, nearly exactly. |

Don't hold your breath till it happens, especially in a democracy where any creature over 18 and having a body temperature of over 95 degrees F. is eligible to vote.

I'm pro-meritocracy as a matter of fact. I believe in equal opportunity for all, equal duties for all and that your position within a group should be based on your accomplishments and rights should be gained as you accomplish things. For instance, in order to vote you need to prove yourself competent through getting educated about politics, economics and so on. How can I put this, if you were looking to find a financial manager, you would want the most qualified financial manager you can find/afford. If you want surgery, you want the best surgeon you can find/afford. When you have a problem with your car, you ask a mechanic for advice, not the cashier at the grocery store. However, for some reason in the thing that shape and influence our lives the most, a person with 3 degrees is equal to a person with no degrees, who has no interest in politics, who can't read and wouldn't know a parliamentary republic from a pack of parliaments. |

In the US we have a very unpleasant history with voter testing. Let's not forget too that the people most likely to fail these kinds of tests are minorities/economically disadvantaged people under-served by the education system.
In the US the responsibility for an educated electorate lies on the public school system (that's the whole reason we have those), not the individual. _________________ If your success is defined as being well adjusted to injustice and well adapted to indifference, then we don’t want successful leaders. Hey, no one's asking you to smell it!
And no, I don't want equality at gunpoint - I don't need it to be, as long as the rule of law is behind it.

When there's respect for the law, there doesn't have to be any guns involved.

In my experience people tend to respect the laws they agree with and kind of "avoid" the ones they don't like. For instance, marijuana is illegal, however a very large amount of people do not give a sh**, same with helmet laws and tax evasion. If you do not like paying Uncle Sam taxes, so you kind of stash a dollar here and a dollar there, men with guns (and calculators) will come to your house and take away your freedoms, enforced by the power of the state. |

Is it unjust for laws to be enforced?
(except for in the case of pot where the issue is the law being enforced unevenly) _________________ If your success is defined as being well adjusted to injustice and well adapted to indifference, then we don’t want successful leaders. But without those law enforcement officers with guns, you'd have criminals and fanatics threatening us with guns, and without the rule of law.
Personally, I prefer law and order to an anarchical Mad Max hell scape.
