My very ASish mom homeschooled me since the fith grade. My parents were never "you must make friends and be social" Nazis and never tried to force me to socialize. My mom tried a program at the local YMCA for it, but none of them seemed to work and the other kids were quite mean to me. The adults running the program were absolutely clueless about how to work with a child with autism. That was back in the mid or late 90's where no one really knew anything about Asperger's. I never had much desire to socialize with other people anyway. _________________ "So for all of you with the courage to stand up and say "I am me, screw you, World if you don't like it!" | I guess I missed that this was about your AS and not your childs. I was diagnosed with Aspergers also. You can make it work, I find keeping things structured and predictable helps both of us. It's improtant to put in to the schedule time for both of you to have some time for youself. I will say that my "me" time usually involves doing the dishes! |
