Take Shannon Elizabeth for example, she's hella hot but can't act for sh**. Which brings me to my next question, are there any actresses you find attractive that are unable to act well in movies?

Nope. Both of my favorite actresses are both gorgeous and talented. Smile

As far as I'm concerned, if you go see a movie and don't primarily recognise the actor or actress as the character they're playing (rather than their celebrity persona) then they're not acting well enough.
I.e: I'm less likely to notice the attractiveness of the actor/actress if they're convincing me that they're the character they're playing. If that CHARACTER then is attractive it doesn't then automatically make me associate that attractiveness with the actor/actress playing that role.

Perhaps they're acting really well, but everyone's attention is drawn to their appearance. Razz

It's a principle that goes all the way back to Marilyn Monroe. Basically, a person can be a celebrity if they garner attention by either the way they act or the way they look. Many try to do both, very few succeed.

Define hot? I'm female, attracted to men, and I see a lot of female actors that I think are beautiful and talented. I don't know about "hot" though.

This is what I look for. Meryl Streep becomes the roles she plays so well that I forget this is Meryl Streep while I'm watching and just think of her as her character. She's the best I can think of at the moment. Julia Roberts is great too.

I'm not as familiar with many younger actors' work though.

Because the USA and Hollywood only really care about looks (even when it's silicone-based) and couldn't care less about talent, brains or skill. Of course some women are like that but they will only really succeed if they have also have a "great body". Americans have a horrible attitude towards people who aren't stereotypically perfect-looking and that will never change. 77% of girls think they're ugly. 100% of society needs to stop being so critical and judgmental. Probably. An argument can be made for Jean Harlow, Clara Bow, and Mary Pickford among others from the 20s through 40s. Monroe's kind of an iconic one though.

I was thinking more that it probably pre-dates film. Generally actresses are selected primarily based on looks because sex sells.
