Just wondering if any people here ever went to their high school prom or had any interesting stories concerning it. I didn't go despite my mom's constant prodding for me to go and my classmates thought I was weird for not showing up either. Anyone have any similar thoughts or experiences?

I went to my high school prom, mostly because I had to for student government. I didn't really enjoy it, because there were so many people and the music was loud and wasn't really the type of music I listen to on my own. I went with a group of my friends, and eventually ended up dancing with a few of the teachers. What I did like was what my friends and I did afterward. None of us really enjoyed high school dances, so we went to one friend's house and played Rock Band and had a bonfire while still in our Prom attire. Though I didn't enjoy the standard high school affair, I was glad to have had the experience, just to say I had done it, and much preferred the small gathering after.

My school didn't have a prom. We were a private Baptist school and they believed dancing was a "sin". Whodathunkit? Anyway, I was dating a guy from another school that had a prom and we went to his. It was great.

This was 1981, and I wore a long mint green off the shoulder dress, ruffles everywhere and he wore a mint green tux. I had big hair, and green eyeshadow and frosted lipstick and nail polish. At the time we thought we looked great because that was the style, but in retrospect, it was hideous. It usually is.

We had a great time, danced, got our picture made, then went to the bar his mother worked at. It was an upscale place and even though I was 17 and he was 18 (the drinking age was 19 then) his mother served us champagne and brought us appetizers, all on the house.

That's basically the story of me going to prom.

My daughter's prom night ended horribly, with them deciding to shut it down an hour early, right at the time she got there. It was her and her fiance's fifth anniversary and they went out to dinner with another couple and were planning on getting there by 9 or 9:30 at the latest, when lead-out was, but because it was raining and the prom was 50 miles away, they got there late. She's getting a refund for the tickets.

Yes, I went to both my high school proms. My Jr. Prom caused me a great deal of emotional damage thanks to three students in special ed with me with different problems other than ADHD

-I couldn't find a date and so I wanted so bad to do a girl's night out for prom, going to dinner, and then rent a limo. I kept trying to contact one of the people who kept saying yes but never really carried through and went and got a date behind my back. She also lied to me and said that I could go with them and another couple as a 5th wheel

-The guy of the other couple, my high school crush chose someone else over me, also lied and told me that he had to withdraw the invitation from me because his mother was driving and didn't want to deal with one more hyper person because one was enough and that was him. The truth was that his girlfriend's mother drove them to the march then dinner. After that, he had to go attend a skating show where he was performing since he was an ice skater and then show up at the dance later. It also turned out that he didn't want me along because he thought I was different and too obsessed with him, plus his girlfriend didn't like me.

-His girlfriend stole away the one girl's date who led me around because she was mad at her boyfriend for skating, which left the other two feeling miserable. Meanwhile, I broke down at a table where the group sat when they got up to dance because I was angry with them for lying to me.

Again, prom really caused some emotional damage on me for years. I also ended up changing schools in the fall because of what was pulled in the spring.

I was so devostated as I had looked forward to that prom for weeks and then I ended up getting let down. Then if that was not enough, the crush who I liked spread nasty lies with his girlfriend later on saying that I got expelled from that school because the teachers could not control me. He said that I showed up at the prom unexpected and that I was not supposed to be there.

Wow, Summer. That's terrible. I wish people didn't have to be like that. I don't understand the fun in spreading rumors to hurt others or treating them like crap. As for being the fifth wheel, I think that was one of the reasons I decided not to go to mine as well. I had no friends my age, just acquaintances, and I don't feel like I would have enjoyed it anyway; if anything, I probably would've inconvenienced someone's group by intruding on their circle, or some thing to that effect.

That sounds pretty neat. The only friend I had by that time was still in the 10th grade so I don't think I would have really had anyone to hang out with like that if I had gone. It's cool you had people that made the night a bit more special for you Smile

Wow, sounds memorable. I'm sorry to hear about your daughter though, that must have been awful. I guess maybe I should've given my prom a chance (although admittedly at the time, I was going through a phase where I felt rather bitter towards my peers), but it's too late to change things now. I can't exactly say I regret not going either.

At that time, the only close friend I gained was a wonderful inspirational bus driver in her 50's who I could talk to. She felt bad that any of them pulled this on me.

Btw, to add to the fun, the crush acted like he felt bad that I was alone and so he danced with me for the last three slow songs when his girlfriend was mad at him and stole the other girl's date who played the limo joke. In fact, he and her broke up for the second time but got together for a third a few year's later. It was then, "She broke us up because she was psycho and was obsessed with me."

My case manager didn't help either. When the guy pulled his stunt about the ride situation and his mother, my case manager went, "I told you mom to call those mothers and she didn't listen." She was very cold about it too. She didn't even bother to have the three of us sit down and talk this situation over.

I went to my senior prom. I was supposed to go with a girl I was seeing, but my parents objected since she didn't go to the same school as me and was a year older (also, they still weren't quite comfortable with my bisexuality yet, which played into it a lot). I went as the only person without a date or a group. It wasn't the best night of my life - the food was so-so, the conversation was mostly between the couples and the dance floor was crowded and a bit too noisy for my tastes. I wouldn't say I was miserable during it, but I probably would have been happier just going out for dinner with some friends or something. Still, getting dressed up was a nice experience and it did teach me things, so I can't really complain.

I saw no purpose to a senior prom. I never went and never considered it. I actually spent my senior year in high school in severe depression that later became full-blown bipolar disorder when I was 19.

I also saw no purpose. It was a stupid waste of time. I disliked a majority of the people I went to school with, and preferred seeing a movie (opening night of Super 8 ) instead of wasting my time with people I couldn't wait to never see again.

I went to 7 proms, there are a lot of high schools in my area and I had a reputation as a good companion. Also, made that prom dress a much more reasonable investment.
Getting dressed up and dancing was fun, but I don't think I would have missed out on too much by not going.

I never went to a single dance, sports game, or party when I was in school & I never had any desire to & I never regretted it at all.
