I personally find it pretty disturbing, the idea that every decision made births an entire new universe. It just seems wrong to me.

I think it's correct. My personal interpretation of Occam's Razor says that it is simpler for there to be many worlds than it is for the world to be fundamentally random.

Isn't that kind of a false paradigm though? If the world is deterministic, it's not random if there is only one world.

But then quantum mechanics would be wrong!

The many worlds (as well as the multiple universe) theory is the only model that makes sense for me. It is the model which best explains why we exist. If there were only one universe, all the factors which led to the world as we know it would seem far fetched. If it were proven that the many worlds theory was wrong, I still would not throw up my hands and say god must have done it. The world as we know it may be hard to believe, but still easier to believe than the god hypothesis..

Wait, maybe we're getting our wires crossed. The phrase "many worlds hypothesis" usually refers to an interpretation of "wavefunction collapse" in quantum mechanics. It claims that the world is continually splitting into multiple worlds, not that there are many worlds which began to exist.

So you think there is a world EXACTLY like this one in EVERY sense, only Starbucks doesn't exist?

It produces exactly the same predictions as the Copenhagen Interpretation. So far no experiment has or even can establish Many Worlds.

It is both right and wrong.
Some parts are logical and other not.
I think a multiverse is much more complicated.
I think nearly every statement about multiverses is wrong.

MWI is the most entertaining of the quantum interpretations. It appeals to science fiction fans.

Do any of you people actually know anything about wave function collapse?

I do. The "wave function" is part of one interpretation. Bohm and De Broigle had another.

The Copenhagen doctrine was not written on two tablets of stone by The Lord.

I was addressing what the original post seemed to be referring to. Maybe you should ask the original poster to clarify.

Happy to see I'm not the only one finding it disturbing and creepy.

You don't need the many world interpretation for that, the vastness of the Universe is more than enough. There is more than 100 billion stars in our galaxy alone, as well as hundred of billions of galaxies in the observable Universe, which may be a tiny part of the whole Universe (Which may even be infinte), which may be only a small part of a tremendously huge Multiverse. It make a lot of stars with planets, even a small propability to life to develop with rare good conditions, a small propabilty to life to become multicellular,a small propabilty of this life to become sentient and intelligent,a small propabilty of intelligent life to develop a industrial civilisation and a small propabilty to then develop a space-farring civilisation; it's still make a huge number of space-farring civilisations in the whole of the Existence. We're simply among the lucky ones in the vastness of the Multiverse.
