Would you consider yourself "proud to be Autistic" similar to people saying they are proud to be GLBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual or Transgender)? The reason I ask this is because being LGBT and diagnosed with an Autistic Spectrum Disorder has the possibility to make a person vulnerable to violence, harassment, discrimination and depression. I am only twenty years old and I just came out as gay about month ago. I have to learn how to deal with the many obstacles that LGBT and Autistic people will experience in the real world.
I am honestly not sure what to say about this. I am new to the gay thing and I am only a twenty year old college student. I do not think it is healthy to hate oneself, but at the same time I find my diagnoses to be aggravating at times because people do not understand what is going through my mind when I encounter situations that make me feel uncomfortable. I went through many experiences where I've beat myself up and wondered "why am I like this?" I am happy to say that I am gay, but I am not so sure about the Autistic part.
I am sure people have varying opinions about this, so I just wanted to ask.

Most of my former therapists were primarily interested in making me "normal." I could not stand them because I know my brain is not "normal" according to them.

Like I said, I am happy to be gay, and I try not to let neither my gayness or my Asperger's define who I am as a person. This is not an easy thing to do because of the social naivety that comes with Asperger's. As far as social skills groups, I've been there and done that.

| I wouldn't describe myself as proud considering both my AS and homosexuality were things that I was born with. I didn't do anything to achieve them, so I see no reason to be proud. That said, I'm not ashamed either. |

I wish I were dead from being transgender. Life is mostly pain now for me.
Asperger's syndrome isn't much fun, but half my friends are probably somewhere on the PDD scale. However, my parents and some of my friends see Asperger's as what causes me to wish I were female. They claim thar transgenderism is my obsession / special interest, trying to delegitimize how I feel. |

I am in that same vote myself. I don't really consider my Asperger's to be some kind of accomplishment, I was just born with it and will have it for the rest of my life. I am proud to identify myself as a gay man though. I have respect for anybody who is proud to be who they are, especially in the United States, which is a mostly Conservative nation.

I have found that there are many gays out there who make fun of other "minority" groups. That is another reason I don't consider myself "proud" to be Autistic. When a gay person refers to Autistic people as "retards" or an Autistic person refers to a gay person as a fa***t it infuriates me. So, if a person is gay or Autistic there is absolutely no excuse to use derogatory slurs towards any "minority" group. They know how it feels to be denied their rights. All "minority" rights are important and they all need to be fought for, and all people deserve to be treated with respect and understanding.
