There a site I've been playing with that has tests/games that are similar, in principle, to IQ tests. Apparently they collect the data from the tests and use it for research into how people think and learn. I haven't looked too deep into the company but the tests are formatted nicely and site looks nice. One of the things I really like about it is it tracks your scores and graphically shows growth over time. It also shows how you did compared to all of the other people who took the test. I've only done the digit span so I don't know about the others but the test sample for DS is approx. 40,000 people, which is a pretty huge sample. I thought this site might be a good tool for strengthening weak areas that I have (I know that's not what the tests were made for but it seems to work ). Some of the tests/games you can play are open to everyone but other tests you have to be registered. I think you have to be registered for score tracking too. I resisted registering for a while but finally bit the bullet. Turns out the registration took about 1 minute. What do you guys think of using something like this as a tool to improve on weakness areas? Here's the link:

I have tried a place called lumosity.com, but you have to register there, and you only get to try it for free for 3 days. If this place you are suggesting are free, then I will go ahead and test it when I get time. Yeah it's totally free. They use the data for research, there no demo or free trial BS or I wouldn't have registered. I hate that crap. |

I'm finding these a lot of fun, and I'm also getting some interestingly uneven results. Some tests I'll get around 20-30% ranking first try, others I'll get over 90%. Also finding that I get a little better each time I repeat a test, but it levels out after a 4 or 5 tries (not really surprising there).
I'm also finding I do much better at the untimed ones, I think the timer distracts me. |

They are fun. I get low scores for everything but digit span. I think there's a bit of a learning curve for the controls and it affects the early scores but once you have the process down you can focus on the test rather than getting side tracked by which button to push. I think the point of their research is how people learn, hence the tracking of scores over time. But like I said I've found these tests to be an opportunity to improve on some weaknesses. Sadly, I fixate on the digit span test and it's definitely not an area of weakness for me. I'm like a moth and DS is my flame. On the bright side I feel that doing their version of the DS test has helped me with processing speed, focus and multi-tasking. At 1st the numbers switched too fast for me to 'code' them into memory and the visual format interfered with my visual style of memory (had to perform 2 'visual' actions in parallel) but it quickly became much easier. I've also noticed that it has helped me with some real world situations such as note taking while listening to a lecture, which I've always found to be nearly impossible. |
