I've been working at a candy store for about a month and a half now, and I absolutely despise it. It caused me to have a mental breakdown 2 days ago. Basically, I just finished up my first year in college, and I ended up failing one class so now I have to work full time, and possibly take a summer class to make up for the grade. But the job is exhausting, both mentally, and physically. Mentally, I have tons of stimulation and I have to constantly deal with customers. I only get one 15 minute break, and I have to work 4pm to midnight/1am five days a week. If that weren't enough, I have to carry around 30 to 50 pound mop buckets with water and boxes up and down stairs. I'm not very coordinated, and I've always been frail. I'm also a girl, so that doesn't help much. My rent is also past due, so this is just completely stressing me out. I have no time for my special interests at all. I had no time during the school year with classes and now I have no time during the summer. I have no money for anything that interests me since it has to all go to my rent. It's not like I'm not trying. I've even considered trying to get SSI benefits just so I can drop down to part time work. It's not that I'm lazy or want to milk the system. I'm just TIRED. Emotionally drained. I'm afraid to leave this job because I need the hours, and my manager is giving them to me. I don't know what to do.....

I could be wrong, or perhaps you aren't in the US, however, isn't it required that those who are paid hourly wages receive two breaks and a lunch?
Sometimes jobs are just not good fits, so if it's feasible don't hesitate to look elsewhere. |

| Where are you? One 15 minute break in an 8-9 hour shift hasn't been legal in any country I've every worked in. |

| I live in the US. I was surprised too because I looked up the labor laws on the Department of Labor's website and found out that an employer doesn't even have to give you a break. I used to have a job that gave me an hour break for working 7-8 hours and a thirty minute break for working 5-6 hours. This job is supposed to give me 30 minutes for working 6-8 hours, but the managers complain if you take longer than 15 minutes. |

Weird, where I live, we are required to take two 15 minute breaks and one 30 minute lunch breaks and that is if you work full time. I think it's also the law our state has too. They have to let us have those breaks.
Don't you have time for your special interests before work and on the weekends? |

| No, I was working 40 hours every week. It got so bad yesterday that I just walked out and quit. I was supposed to work 1-9, and the manager asked since someone called in if I would be willing to cover their shift (work all the way until midnight). I said I would, since I needed the hours. But I've been sick, also, so after working half of my shift I started feeling really nauseous from the flu I've picked up and the medications that I've been taking. I told the manager that I would be able to finish my shift, but didn't think I would be able to pick up the other one anymore. It's not like it was a big deal if I didn't, either, because there would be 3 other people and the store is fairly small. He informed me that I would NOT be able to go home when I was scheduled to be off and that I would work until midnight. This really ticked me off, as I was not obligated to close that night, I was doing it as a courtesy to him and his business. So, I walked out and quit. |

US Labor Laws vary on a state-to-state basis. Apart from jobs with high risk of serious injury (manufacturing, construction, etc), there's no requirement for breaks in a workday in many states. Where I live (Virginia) - there's not even a requirement for a meal period. The assumption is that market conditions will drive people away if companies don't provide those "perks".
As an employer, I would be incredibly upset if one of my employees agreed to take someone else's shift and then copped out. Once you agree to something - you absolutely must follow through with it. Alternatively, if you can't, you need to do the leg-work to not leave your employer in a lurch. Instead of informing them that you can't do what you agreed and expecting them to figure it out, make sure that you find someone who can cover your obligation for you.
Finding someone to cover a shift last minute is extremely difficult, and monopolizes your time as a manager. That is the one thing that is nearly universally something that will get you fired. _________________ Nothing posted here should be construed as the opinion or position of my company, or an official position of WrongPlanet in any way, unless specifically mentioned. |

Then maybe the manager should consider being a team player and covering the shift instead of thinking that he or she doesn't have to do anything just because they have a white collar on their shirt. That's one thing that really upsets me, and I saw this a lot from the managers at the store that I worked for. Just because you may have worked a job longer, or have a little more experience in an area doesn't make you God, and it most certainly doesn't make me inferior or incompetent to you. I got so sick of them looking down on me when they put their pants on one leg at a time every morning just like I do.
But it's over and done with now. The very next day after I quit, I got hired as a prep cook in a restaurant, and I LOVE it. I'm getting offered $9.50/hr and as many as 60 hours a week if I want to work that much. I have my own little area in the kitchen, and I can listen to music while I work, so things are going a lot better now. |

Soomie, good on you for walking out on that last job! I'm so glad you've found a job that's a much better fit for you. Sometimes we have to be brave and close one door to have another door with a better opportunity behind it open.
I can't believe how some of you in the USA are treated by your employers... that is so wrong! I live in New Zealand where we have strict employment laws to protect the rights of workers (you have to be given meal breaks over here). It is a real eye-opener (a sad one... which also makes me angry) to read here how so many are treated so unfairly. |

Bunnymum, don't judge the entire USA based on this story.
I've worked several retail jobs, we always got a 30 minute meal break if we worked over 6 hours at any of the jobs. Same when I was a waiter.
I don't mean to imply that the OP is lying or anything, it just sounds like the people he works for are an exception to the rule. |
