I do have to comment on this. See the reason why they name the fashion lolita is because they are *trying* to emulate sexually promiscuous young girl though often the people who are cosplaying with that stuff are legal age. There trying to be overly cutesy and freaky at the same time sometimes with skimpy clothing. Japan has this crazy kawaii thing where cute, innocent girls equal sexy.

The thing that bothers me is why did they pick the name "Lolita". Why didn't they pick a catchy Japanese name? It's a known fact that the name will conjure up things in people's minds. So, why did they pick it?? Is that what they're trying to do? My elder brother is a detective in a sex crimes unit and he says that Japanese Porn really goes to town on youth and the school girl image. Don't you think that by using the name "Lolita", they're pushing this? My Japanese-American neighbor call Japan "The Land of Extremes". He says that a lot of beauty comes from there and when something ugly comes from there, it's REALLY ugly.
A previous post mentioned "Loli". Why didn't they use that name? "Loli-pop"
Anything but "Lolita"

/has actually read it

I think the style is really cute and adorable but I can't see myself wearing it.

I think of it as cute and adorible more than sexy really. Whenever I see a woman dressed up in that kind of fashion I get all soft and mushy inside and want to hug them as opposed to impure sexual thoughts but thats just me. Oh yeah and say Kawaii once in a while Embarassed

Because it's about a paedophile. I read it a long time ago but as I recall it's about an older man who marries a woman because he is sexually obsessed with her 12 year old daughter. The book is written from his point of view, and he really believes that the child is seducing him, when of course he is actually abusing her. It's not a very nice book, in my opinion, but it is well written. After I read that book I didn't want to read any more of Nabokov's books. So Lolita is an unfortunate name for a fashion trend that is popular with girls and young women, but it is quite possible that the name was based on a misunderstanding of what the book was about.

I LOVE lolita fashion!

I don't wear it, because with my figure it tends to look more French Maid than Little Bo Peep, which is completely not the look I want... but it's really cute on those who can pull it off. Smile

I love lolita fashion, but I don't wear it much anymore (and I wish they'd call it something else. The Lolita-as-the-temptress thing really REALLY irks me.) It's just so expensive to find something nice and not too extreme. Even DIY Lolita is so costly!

I LOVE the book Lolita, and all of Nabokov's work in general. It's been an almost obsessive interest of mine for as long as I can remember.

The book is about a pedophile (Hubert) who marries a woman because he's obsessed with her very young daughter. She finds out, and in running to get help is hit by a car and killed. The remainder of the book follows the story of Hubert as he flees with the girl and continues to abuse her, deluding himself into believing she loves him in return. In the end, she runs away with another pedophile who also abuses her, before escaping him too and getting married to a good but very poor man. Hubert eventually finds her, grown up and pregnant, no longer attractive to him, gives her her the money her mother left her and kills the other pedophile she ran away with. He goes to jail and is telling the story from there.

The book is a prisoner story (as are many of Nabokov's books) and while very sad, it is beautifully written. His writing has a beautiful rhythm and hyperfocuses on seemingly insignificant details which I find very soothing.

The book is about a man who forms a sexual relationship with a 12-year-old girl.

I love lolita fashion, but unfortunatly I weight way to much to pull it off. Maybe one day I will be able to wear it regardless of how old I am. Would make a change from my usual boy fashion

As horrible as this sounds, the book itself was incredibly easy to read- I found it's 'odd' somewhat unfixed narrative felt very natural.
