I suddenly got curious about how people on the spectrum do with dancing?
Personally I couldn't dance even if my life depended on it.
I do "dance" when I'm alone and a song I like is on the radio, but I wouldn't say this counts... (edit: I say it doesn't count and I put "dance" in quotation marks because I'm basically just moving around more than if there was no music on, but I'm not dancing)
I can't do any kind of dance with a partner. The closest thing could only be described as "shameless drunken groin grinding", but I wouldn't really call this dancing, heheh..
I have a feeling there won't be many dancers here, unless it's someone's special interest, but I don't know, that's why I'm asking
So, do you dance?

I spin and pace when alone, but I don't dance. |

Me dance? Uh no.
I guess you could call it interpretive dancing... AKA: "Is she dancing or having a seizure?"
I "dance" all the time around the house when I'm by myself and the blinds are closed.... I don't even need music sometimes, I just make my own.... _________________ "Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal" |

I can't dance to save my life! If I try to dance, it is a humorous time enjoyed by all-except for me. People have tried to teach me but I just don't have the rhythm to do it. Oddly though, I CAN drive a car with a manual transmission and do that quite well. _________________ Uncertain of diagnosis, either ADHD or Aspergers.

Yes, I can! It does not come naturally, but I can make myself learn it. I need explicit instructions, which I can get either via YouTube or friends.
Last summer, when my entire family was out of town, I went to a party and took some ecstacy and learned the Apple Bottom Jeans dance. I mean I learned it right and did it good. I've seen the video, it's not all spazzed or nothing. I can only do that one dance either drinking or with some kind of a buzz.
However, I can do every step of the Night Fever dance, to this day, absolutely perfect, drunk or sober. _________________ Frances

I used to go out dancing a lot when I was younger and healthier. I took ballet classes in my late teens, which gave me a good base from which to dance gracefully. This meant a lot to me being such a Klutz beforehand! I miss dancing a lot, but can't do it anymore due to Fibromyalgia and Chronic fatigue. _________________ Dreams are renewable. Yes, I can dance. I took lessons from 3yrs to 13yrs, including ballet. After I stopped the lessons, I continued to dance at home. I do Zumba now, which is a danced based exercise class. When I'm learning a dance, which is being demonstrated by the teacher, I hyperfocus. It doesn't take me long to learn a routine. Moving in time to the beat doesn't take any effort, but I have been dancing since I was 3. As for co-ordination, I can't drive, can't use mirrors and fall over nothing, but I'm very co-ordinated when I dance. _________________ "We act as though comfort and luxury were the chief requirements of life, when all we need to make us really happy is something to be enthusiatic about." | It's so sad. I used to think I was a good dancer. Enough people have told me how bad i am, that I will no longer dance in public. Though, in college I used to go to clubs. |

NO.
I've taken ballet, however, which has dramatically improved my overall posture and clumsiness.
And. I used to go to raves when I was younger and *danced* there (which was basically me flailing around by myself to trance music)...raves were actually one VERY social place where I never felt *out of place* or *weird* for who I was...though at times I would short-circuit and need to leave. |

When I'm playing an instrument I'm always doing repetitive movement. If I'm not doing something consciously (like a coordinated movement I do with the guitarists in one band I'm in during live performances), then I'm doing something without knowing (like rocking back and forth or side to side, etc.)
I can dance pretty easily now, but I have trouble with the social aspects of dancing - I more of just move in ways I feel like moving, but when others try to dance with me it usually leads to nothing because I often don't realize they're trying to dance with me for a while, and when I do I'm often uninterested in dancing with them.
Also, before I was in a band that likes people dancing to their music, I never danced, and it would have been hard to get me to. |
