Yes, FF3 DS is really ehh..you need to play FF3/6 on an snes emulator. Its up there with Chrono Trigger, I like CT a wee bit more. If you have a psp and like strategy games you should really check Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together, very amazing game.

FF3 DS is a bugger of a game... very challenging, but I love it. In what way do the SNES and DS versions differ?

Monster quest series has some good ones

Dark cloud is awesome. First one has a great story, otherwise the second one is much better

I only have Oblivion and Skyrim. Do you recommend the other ones?

Morrowind has a very engaging storyline to it. I think it's the only Elder Scrolls where I actually completed the main quest. However I do tend to get distracted lol.

I have only played those 2. From what I have heard of morrowind you either love or hate it. A lot more customization, there is light, middle, and heavy armor. You can wear clothes underneath and all of that can be enchanted out of what I remember hearing from other people. A lot more level grinding,

They are completely different games. FF3 DS is a 3d overhaul/remake of Final Fantasy 3 for the nes, a game that was never released outside of Japan. The same applies for FF2. Outside of Japan we received Final Fantasy 4 and 6 but they were renumbered as sequels to the original Final Fantasy. Technically FF7 would have been FF4 but they decided to confuse the hell out of everyone and release it as 7.

FF3 for the snes is considered by many to be the greatest Final Fantasy game ever and a hallmark of role playing games, cherished by everyone who played it.

For one thing they called it FF7 because they released the unreleased ones on later consoles in the U.S.

Also FF7 is considered teh best FF ever.

but easy integration of huge mods allowing one to grow telvani towers anywhere you choose, one could build a society.

the spell creation, enchanting and alchemy was also very well done, but yes it did require an ammount of patience one wouldnt believe playing skyrim today.

Couldn't have said it better myself. I don't even bother much with the spells and alchemy as much as I should, even though I'm sure it would help. I just keep getting stuck. Laughing

Between FF6 and FF7 I think we can agree that those two games get by far the most love from people. FF2/4 is like that to a similar extent but I was never the biggest fan of it. I didn't want to start some "WHICH IS THE BEST FF DEBATE" but on top games lists by magazines you will always see 6 and 7 in a rather high place, probably 2/4 too. 6 and 7 are very different games, the first is the 16 bit jrpg at its apex in terms of story, music, graphics and depth. 7 was the first truly cinematic game experience on the psx/n64 generation of hardware and easily the most popular FF game even after 14ish years since its release. For the vast majority, "Favorite Final Fantasy ever" will fall between either 4,6 or 7.

Anyways, to be on topic I'd like to add Valkyrie Profile to the list of games worth trying. I just played the psx entry but it was a very beautiful, unique game..I believe its available on the psp too.

If you're looking for a good traditional JRPG for this gen, it would probably be Lost Odyssey. There's some debate on whether Dark Souls is a WRPG or not, The Witcher series is another good WRPG series but it is mature.

Its from Japan, its a Japanese roleplaying game. Some will say its wrpg inspired but its prequels were very difficult, harsh games as well and relatively unknown. The difference is that King's Field was a first person dungeon crawler on the consoles. Just because a game from Japan isn't anime inspired or turn based doesn't mean its "western" inspired. The original Shin Megami Tensei games were challenging first person dungeon crawlers as well and were not very jrpg-ish either.

I actually really like the original FF3 for NES - I have a fan translation of the Japanese ROM that I play on an emulator every couple years. Visually and musically it's dated now but for its time it really bridged the gap between the "roots" of Final Fantasy and the beginning of the SNES series of games. It was amusing to find out that both iterations of Cecil from FF4 were actually palette-enhanced versions of FF3 sprites.

FF6j/3us is definitely on my top 5. Played it first in 8th grade and actually found it too challenging to finish. Didn't actually complete it without any cheats (damn my total lack of discipline!) until I was 25, playing the PS1 re-release.

I just got done with a replay of FF8. Used to hate it but it's starting to grow on me. The two main characters are about the worst characters in video game history but the rest of the cast and the overall story makes up for it. The infamous junction system is still too overcomplicated but I was able to avoid mind-numbing hours of drawing spells by playing mind-numbing hours of Triple Triad Embarassed

Final Fantasy aside, I didn't see anyone mention the Mother series. EarthBound (Mother 2 in Japan) is also one of my all-time favorites. It's quirky and offbeat, and really well done for a late-gen SNES game. I would pick up an emulator and an EarthBound ROM (or a cartridge and console from eBay) if you haven't played it yet. The difficulty level is low, it's a pretty quick play through, but I never get tired of it.
