I was diagnosed with something during my childhood. I can't remember when someone later disclosed to me what it was. But you don't get SSI or disability checks the year you turn 18 for nothing.
I wish I could be more descriptive but, there's enough that would fill a book.
The title speaks for itself.
I, don't like large groups of people, or crowd noise.
Eye contact is a hurdle.
Handshaking , people wanting to pat you on the back or head, getting kissed hugged tickled by parents and grandparents..
Felt like torture
Sensory related stuff that's waned or still there.
I can't stand walking in bare feet (except to shower/bathe)
Clothes feel funny
Food on my plate couldn't touch.
Having to have something to keep my hands busy
I don't like hats.
And countless others.
There's epilepsy. When I was about 4 years old I was deaf and mute which contributed to my still present stuttering. Used to have sort of lisp . I was treated for ADD/ADHD when I was a kid.Panic and aanxiety garbage. Labeled and unlabeled with depression. SSRIs seem to no effect.
I found school to be worthless. The "educated fool". Quit school during the 11th grade. I got a GED afterwards. I'm lousy with math and science. I can't really read tape measure/ruler. Could never figure out what one means by nine-sixteenths or five-eighths. Plus the amount of teasing and bullying I had to contend with. Mostly verbal, but remember a couple of incidents where it got physical.
I'm much more into fine arts than mechanical and technical things.

Sounds like you've got Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) on top of some other stuff. That's tough.

Welcome! I can relate to some of the sensory stuff, but I think it's milder in my case. But I also wanted to say you obviously write very well, and I know how frustrating it is to have a high level of intelligence, but struggle to apply it to anything useful, or hold down a job... That's been my own experience anyway!
Just wanted to say Hi and you're not alone.. Hope you enjoy the forums here! |
