Some physical anthropologists once speculated that India's aboriginal inhabitants were racially Australoid (i.e. related to Australian Aborigines, New Guineans, and Melanesians) before the so-called Aryan Caucasoids came over and conquered the place. I don't know if there's any up-to-date physical anthropological or genetic data supporting this hypothesis, but it inspired me to draw Siddhartha Gautama Buddha, the founder of Buddhism, as a black Australoid type. Oddly enough, Buddhist artists have traditionally restored the Buddha with vaguely Afro-looking curled hair. |
