| So I bumped into this new MMO The Secret World. It's a Horror/Conspiracy based MMO set in an alternate version of our Earth. The players take on the role of members of Secret Societies that are competing for control of supernatural knowledge and, co-operating to protect the world from supernatural disaster. If you've ever played Call of Cthulu this is the computer version. One of the motto's of the game is "Everything is True". Meaning all myths, legends and conspiracy theories are true. |

| I saw this game, it looked very interesting. I don't have it, but I know 2 of the factions very well. The Illuminati, the kings of conspiracy theories and secret world domination, pun not intended. Then there is the Templars, the Christian supremacy (sort of) group, they were behind the crusades back in the middle ages. Personally I'd go with the Illuminati, they're the most mysterious in my opinion, and I've had enough of the Templars from Assassins creed. This is just my opinion though, can't you eventually try them all too? |

| This game's concept looks REALLY awesome, I cannot stress how awesome..but I really cannot stomach another mmo, plus its funcom. I plunked down the money (regretfully) for the Guild Wars 2 CE box so I'm having to justify that. I think a tabletop game using this setting would be very cool. |

Yeah the only thing that puts me off is the in game store items but, it's kind of hypocritical because I've used the WoW pet store.
I went with The Dragon too. I'm focusing on swords and chaos magic. Grim server Nicknamed Kouatl. |

Yeah, I was looking at this yesterday, with my 12 year old son, and wondering whether to get it. It does look amazing. I love the genres it uses, and the way it references so many famous horror and RL-fantasy books, films and traditions.
Not sure if our internet connection would be up to it, but my main cavil at the moment is the cost, about three times what we usually invest in a single-player game, for 30 days play, and no guarantee that there'll be enough content to make further subscription fees worth it, so the game has to provide as much entertainment as three other games to make the disc price and first month's sub worth it ... hmmm
... :lol It's my son's thirteenth birthday in less than a month though ... and he's less than enchanted by the latest and massive/far-reaching Runescape update/rework, which MMO was more and more of a grindfest for him anyway the last year or two ...

The Blizzard store is fine, we've all brought pets off of there. Its not like they give you any kind of ingame advantage. |

Depending on your standards it might not be appropriate for a 13 year old there is strong language and sexual situations along with gratuitous violence. About on the same level as the Fallout series. Just FYI
IDK what the standards are for kids these days. I'm taking care of my neice this summer and, I let her pick out dome music on my Zune the other day when we where driving back from the 4th of July. She pick Nine Inch Nails and the first song up was "Closer". I nearly freaked out but, she said her mom listens to it all the time. I beleived her because I know her mom LOL.
Anyhow, I re-re-rolled on Arcadia (My first character was there but, I deleted him for some reason). Still a Dragon focusing on Chaos and Blades. The name is Sui-Riu. Which is the name of the Japanese Rain Dragon (according to the internets). |

| The game launch pretty well but, now there are some huge problem. The biggest problem is that chat will periodicaly shutdown for many players. I mean all chat even say, group and, cabal chat. The only way to fix it is to relog. It really takes the multiplayer out of the game. Although the story and the setting are pretty good. I can't coment on the graphics because I'm still playing on my lesser computer. Right now the game has alot of problems and, the ammount of developer support seems pretty flakey. So I can't really recomend anyone purchase the game unless they want to pay 50 bucks for a 30 hour single player game with a decent storyline. |

I rolled a Dragon character on Arcadia. Dragon seem like the most mysterious and philosophically-minded faction, which suits me well. Go with Illuminati if you like comedy and Templars if you want to be the traditional "good guys" (at least in their own minds - none of the factions are truly good or evil).
I'd highly recommend this game to anyone who likes quirky fiction with a lot of mystery and horror, e.g. Buffy, Supernatural, The Walking Dead, Stephen King, Neil Gaiman. It has more atmosphere than any game I've played in recent years, and that includes single player games. The story and world has a maturity and depth that has been sadly absent from the MMO genre except perhaps EVE Online. I love the way it blurs the lines between reality and fiction by having you use Google and visit fake websites to solve puzzles.
It will never be massively popular - it's just not bright and cartoony enough for mainstream MMO tastes, and there are no elves, dwarves or lightsabers, which is pretty much a prerequisite for WoW-like success (no offense intended to those who enjoy cartoony games with elves, dwarves or lightsabers - I do myself sometimes). The upside of this relative obscurity is that the community seems much more mature and nicer to be around than more popular games.
Even if you just play it like a single player game and don't subscribe after the first free month, it could still last hundreds of hours, which is more than worth US$50. We're talking Skyrim-level value for money here. The average first person shooter costs $50 and lasts perhaps 10 hours as a single player game. I believe next weekend they're opening it up for free to everyone, so if you're interested, that's a good time to try before you buy. |

| The story is really very good and the game is worth a play for just that but, some of the other "MMO" aspects are a travesty. I'm noticing a serrious bad trend of companies placing the "MMO" sticker on games but, not really living up to the expectations of what a modern MMO should be. Maybe that's just because the bar of expectation has been set so high. Funcom is a company that runs serveral MMOs including Eve Online wich has been a successful MMO for years. I don't understand how they can mess up something as fundemental to an MMO as a working chat system. Pretty much the only time my chat works is in Argatha and I have to relog to get it to work there. This makes the game effectively a single player game for me. I haven't been able to try out any of the group content or find a Cabal to join. This has put a damper on my enthusiasm for the game. |
