I don't expect many replies, but anyone here play 40k or picking up the new rulebook? I REALLY want it but at the same time I'm strapped for cash and STILL haven't painted my chaos space marines back from 09. I'm really freakin excited for battle brothers, chaos space marines get actual daemons again!! Sweetness! CSM rumors say they will be getting cultists too so that may fill the 'niche of traitor guard even though csm as it stands can ally with IG (not as battle brothers like daemons though).

I really want the new CSM codex to come out too just so I can flip through it. They are getting a new flyer and everything I've read sounds cool and maybe Thousand Sons will be useful. I love Ahriman and any sorcery and magic-y stuff plus the 1k Sons have some of my favorite lore.

The downside is that I'm trying to save for a good bike, so it could be quite awhile until I get my hands on the rule book, new codex and other stuff. I still love to look at 40k stuff and think up potential forces.

I do find it really strange that dark eldar are battle brothers for regular eldar. DE struck me as the evilest, most sinister force in 40k, alongside chaos, they're awesome, I love them and wanted to field a force one day but it seems so weird they can easily ally with regular eldar. Makes me think of Tower or Conflux from Heroes of might Magic buddying up with cenobites from Hellraiser. Its a good money making ploy and Gaming Workshop LOVES themselves some money.. Rolling Eyes

I welcome the ally system since it means I can build a CSM force with the best of both worlds, though I WOULD like legion specific rules but have accepted that's never happening again. Also lol at the tau being battle brothers of the space marines, so much for purging filthy xenos (not that I ever played regular SMs).

Thoughts anyone?

Yes, that’s very strange considering how the Imperium is not exactly known for being very diplomatic... It doesn’t make any sense as to why they would be battle brothers… Here is a clip from a horrible game known as “Fire Warrior”… I played this game awhile back and it was not the best experience. The story and the cut scenes were great, and that was about it. “Honor the Fire Caste!”





In response to playing WH40K again, finding people to play it is the difficult part, and that does not seem to change much. In the event I was able to play it, even though I have a decent group of SM’s, I really was considering looking into the Tau Empire. I always found them to be fascinating. Also, they are a peaceful race (seemingly on the surface) which is also highly advanced. The thing is that with the Tau Empire, this “Greater Good” which they are in service to can be viewed in multiple ways. That said, they are still very fascinating and I plan on learning much more details about their race in particular.

Ah that Fire Warrior clip is cool. I remember hearing about that game but never playing it. Did you ever give Space Marine a go? I've heard mixed things about it, by that I'm referring to the PS3/360 action game.
I discovered last night there was actually a 40k movie released in 2010, written by Dan Abnett, about Ultramarines but maybe I'll add to my dvd collection. Dunno

I actually discovered a GW shop that's semi-close (about an hour or more drive to where I live) so maybe I'll be able to demo a game there in the future. I'm really shy about going to a store though and might have to upfront in some way about my ASD and social issues. My dad agreed he would call the store beforehand when I finally went so maybe they could get a really patient employee to demo a game or someone cool. I just don't want to play someone who's all rush, rush, rush and gets mad at me for being slow.

I don't really hate the tau, their models just remind me more of another newer tabletop game called Infinity, which looks quite good too. Still, I obviously lean toward being dark and chaotic or utilizing magic and weird stuff for factions I pick so that's why I prefer chaos and DE. I think its even odder yet cool necrons can ally with so many factions because I've always liked their models. Tau at least seem neat to me because I like mechs and being shooty in general I just prefer antagonistic factions more, with some exceptions (high elves in FB are cool to me).

The ally rule is really cool, I hope it stays for future additions because it beats having to build a ton of different armies if one faction has a thing or two that interests you. I REALLY wish the new CSM codex would come out though, I want to see their new flyer and cultists. Supposedly its a mechanical flying dragon of some sort, maybe it'll be like the chaos dragons that the Warriors of Chaos get in WFB, those are some GREAT models.

My younger brother played Space Marine on PC. I have not played it as of yet, but it's on my list. He seemed to like it from what I gathered.

I might buy it sometime if it super cheap. I really don't play a whole lot of video games anymore but if its 40k and is fun enough I guess its worth trying as long as it doesn't have forced online or co-op bullshit like RE5.

What's your space marine force like? I think my favorite non-traitor chapters are The Salamanders, I'd honestly like to make a pre-heresy list like the One Thousand Sons or Iron Warriors but I have no idea how that would work.


lol unpopular topic, guess people on WP don't like warhammer or tabletop. Given the entry price I guess I can't blame people. Oh well, thanks for posting and talking RD, such a great friend Twisted Evil

I would have to agree that DE are incredibly evil, and an alliance with Chaos just sends it over the top... Twisted Evil I also like the parallels you mentioned between Heroes of Might and Magic, Hellraiser, and Warhammer 40K. I find such observations to be agreeable. I could not help but think about what it would be like for the regular Eldar to team up with the Tau Empire.. I think that would be very interesting to see for many reasons. One such reason is because the Tau have that whole spirituality and diplomacy thing going on, and of course their technology is very interesting.

The modeling aspect alone is appealing to me and the lore can be fun to read about. I got about halfway through with the Eisenhorn omnibus but I really want to get Dan Abnett's book about The Thousand Sons. Its fun to think up potential army lists too, I just wish I knew some cool people who liked playing for fun because I'm worried when I finally do to the nearest GW store I'll have to deal with rule mongers.

I feel the same about D&D really, the most fun I had with it was when I played a game of 3.5 and we abridged a ton of stuff, rolled for stats and just had a good time. My wizard had a bunch of crappy evocation spells because I love fire.

I should just make a tabletop topic in general because Warmachine and Infinity look really badass to me. I think you'd like Infinity a lot, RadicalDreamer, if you like the tau much. Most of the armies are very shooty and the factions are all pretty cool.

The official site kinda sucks so I'll just give some basic info about each faction and how they play from what I've read:

For Infinity, the factions are all human except for one, its set in an alternate future where everything is brought out by these huge mega corporations, very cyberpunk-ish:

PanOceania- alliance of Australia,New Zealand and Filipino economy buying out the US,EU and India's markets after a big crash. Most high-tecch, lots of remote control
robots and mechs. Extremely shooty, ultra-capitalist right wing assholes that are highly religious and allow the catholic church to have giant armored knights as its own private military. One of planet earth's two super powers.



Yu-Jing- Result of China buying Japan's post-crash debts,invited other asian countries to join and became a hyperpower to match PanOceania. Less robots than P.O. and favors elite armored infantry (who can also pilot mechs) and have a bit more emphasis on close quarters combat. Lack the technology of P.O. but have craploads of land and infantry units.

HaqqIslam- Followers of a new type that Islam that allows tolerance and scientific enlightenment. Financially secure and technically neutral since they sell to the other factions (in the lore). Lighter infantry but have interesting options that make them more expensive to field and they are masters of bio-engineering which further allows them to augment troops and such, I guess. Super religious and another shooty faction. Pretty popular from what I've seen.

Nomads - Former inhabitants of Earth that declared independance from the hyper powers and went into space for refuge. As the name would suggest they are made up of various types of people, like criminals,misfits, rather deviants etc. They do lots of drugs and use bio-modification a lot and supposedly have "the best parties". Supposedly they are very flexible fluff wise since the Nomads are so diverse so you can paint and model your troops in whatever way you desire. They are a bit of a "wild card" army in this respect.

From a gameplay standpoint they focus on weakening the enemy and being a pain in the ass. Best hackers in the game and have a good fix of drones/mechs and elite/medium infantry.

Ariadna - Nation formed by the descendants of the Russian, French, Scottish and American colonists who were on some space colonisation program. They went through
a wormhole which later collapsed when other Earth ships tried to follow, causing the Earth market to crash and stranding everyone on the planet Ariadna. The earthlings had some century-long war with the native sentient dog like race and warred against each other as seperate nations until Russia, who had the biggest numbers, decided to take over as the one government.

Eventually the two hyper powers of Earth rediscovered Ariadna and tried re-taking parts of it which fueled a commercial war that eventually ended up Ariadna's sovereignty and recognition as an independent nation. Obviously a lot more history but I'm ad-libbing this. They are close to the Nomads but have a fierce grudge with P.O and Y.J.


Gameplay wise lots of cheap infantry, really cheap elites, dog-warriors and a ton of camouflage and tactical stuff. Can't be hacked because of the low level of their tech. and work best as a guerrilla army, setting traps, using stealth and being sneaky bastards.

Combined Army- only non-human faction,engaged in a war with the human factions. Basically some aliens foresaw the destruction of the universe so they built a super advance AI so they could ascend to a higher level of existence and leave behind the physical world. Like always, the AI screwed over the aliens and instead ascended itself. To counter this the aliens made a second AI but instead made it more like them but because its like them it cannot ever find the knowledge to ascend so the combined army is on this futile, pointless quest they don't realize. The second AI rationalized that it needed more computation power and the best way to do this was to fight and conquer other worlds, convert other races and evolve in the process, sort of. They're more high-tech and computery than the zerg or hydralisks.

Gameplay wise the Combined Army is the most elite, expensive faction with the best stats but again, very cost heavy so you're not going to field tons of units in a normal point game. They are aliens so they have lots of funky technology that allows them to do cool sh**, like not die, transfer their mind from one body to another, shapeshift

Thanks for that highly detailed description of the various factions and some brief dynamics which apply to them. I found it to be most helpful in gaining a greater understanding.

The dog people sound strange. I also like how you mentioned they are stealthy and whatnot. Such guerrilla tactics are paramount to their survival I’m sure… I could understand why they would pull ninja-like tactics on their more highly advanced adversaries because anything else would be suicide. I can also find great humor in entertaining the idea of these dog people totally screwing over their far more powerful enemies. It makes me think of various situations and scenarios in which such events would occur. lmao

Figures, as advanced as Combined Army is, they still could not see past their own arrogance to understand the fatal flaw in attempting to force a natural process of ascension by technological means. The attempted merger of technology and spirituality/consciousness/divinity is not exactly the most stable combination, and for the best of reasons. But I guess they learned that the hard way…

Despite their arrogance, I found this Combined Army fascinating, much like the Aleph, but either of them would probably not be something that I would choose if I ever played this game. I was always more likely to choose “the underdog” (no pun intended in relation to the native sentient dog-like race mentioned above) In most cases, I have always favored the underdog in many stories, games, etc. Those are some cool pictures and the paint detail in the miniatures appears to be very intricate.

I purchased the 6th Edition Rulebook last week. Still trying to get my head wrapped around all the new rules. Right now I'm trying to decide if I want to do a DE/Eldar army or a Eldar/DE army. Unfortunately I don't have a DE book at the moment because they were out of stock when i got the main rulebook.

That's cool. It's cool to see that others appreciate these kinds of games. I'm glad there is a comics and games shop near where I live. Sadly, such places are scarce these days... I like to go to the local comics and games shop when it's raining outside or when I have a lot on my mind. I view such locations as yet another type of sanctuary. It's good to step out of the world at times and into another one, and these locations provide us with such an outlet.
