Seen this on the news yesterday, major story here in NYC, they said on the news yesterday she had a learning disability but today "sources" are saying the girl is autistic.

abclocal.go.com/wabc/story?section=news/local/new_york&id=8738148

She somehow got outside her room and was dancing on her A/C unit before falling, glad to hear shes okay.

"A hero's a sandwich... I just saw a kid..."

That's exactly what a bonafide hero would say--a truly 'model citizen' and all around decent human-being. I wanna shake that fellow's hand (the one he didn't injure selflessly saving a fellow human being in a desperate situation).

Thanks for the lift in spirit, Trainbuff. Nice to see some good news now and again.

Regards to all.

A better video and without the news media cluttering it: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-18876903

Why the heck did the man take a video of it than going over there to help the girl himself? Well at least it became a good thing for the media because it showed the bus driver being a hero.

I didn't know she had autism. Local news blamed the parents for not paying attention. Glad she was caught and alright.

When I hear about things like this I try to give parents the benefit of the doubt and not assume it was their fault because they were negligent. Maybe the A/C wasn't installed quite right but they had to have it in because it's been so hot here in NY lately? I've seen A/Cs in windows with cloths and stuff shoved in the side because they didn't have the side thing or it wasn't wide enough. Looking at my dining room A/C in the window I don't think it would be that hard for a curious child to get the screw out that is holding the side thing in place, push it over, and wiggle out. There is not enough room on mine but there could be on bigger ones.

I can't imagine that people expect parents to literally be watching their children 24/7.

Looking at the video, it looks like getting onto that air conditioner through that window isn't an easy task.

All of us with autism should have angels like that bus driver looking out for us.

I don't care if she's autistic - I'm glad that man caught her.

Speaking as someone with autism, I can say, only a person who is autistic would probably sneak out a window to dance on the air conditioner.

My daughter managed to climb out of a window, remove the fly-screen and onto the roof of our house when she was 4.
I can imagine it must be tough for a mother to keep her daughter who might also have ADHD from getting bored in a small apartment.

My daughter is seven now, and autistic; and it was a real chore for my wife and I to keep an eye on her and hold of her hand anytime we'd go out when she was younger, because given an opportunity, she'd try to take off just for the sake of taking off.

She a wanderer...ya I did alot of that as a kid too. except I loved the woods and would walk and play in the woods for hours. I jumped off a dry bridge once...20 feet to the ground, and landed on my feet My mom tried to to stop me but I jumped before she could reach me. I had a facination with jumping from high places cuz I loved the feeling I got when coming down. surprisingly I was never hurt and always landed on my feet with my knees bent to absorb the shock. The only broken bones I got were in my fingers and toes doing much less adventuresome stuff.
I also loved to dive into the pool from the top of the pool slide which was about 15-20 ft high and the water was only 8 ft deep there. I was always bad at math, but managed not to break my neck. My dad would have a screaming fit when he saw me do that which was often...he tried to explain to me the mathmatics of it all. Numbers are a foreign language to me. Finally he just said, if I catch you do that again, you are banned from the pool. I understood that, so I did it when he was not home.

Anyway, my point is.... autistic kids do the darnest things
