I've worn Sweat Pants but, only during times of cold weather within the confines of my house or whenever I choose to go for my daily walk when it's cold yet, you would not see me wearing them(sweat pants) anywhere else. Yes, my idea of fashion may be on the Nerdy/Geeky side  Ah, I've learned that trying to be super fashionable like the characters or persons in the media is simply not my idea of being one's self. I'll conclude with saying this if someone was judging me on fashion then you would have to look elsewhere for, I don't give a --%$& about trying to be some Brad Pitt or Orlando Bloom wannabee.

what type of rehearsals? in the summer i only wear shorts. In bermuda it's common for businessmen to wear standard suits except replace the normal khaki pants with shorts which looks patently ridiculous!!!

Orchestra. I play with a community orchestra that's pretty active around Salt Lake City. We do about 6-7 concerts per year (as opposed to just a Christmas and Easter one like most community orchestras do) so our rehearsal schedules are pretty intense.
Also, some of us have formed semi-professional chamber music groups. So far, most of what my particular quartet has done is promotional work for the orchestra. For example, we played Christmas carols at Barnes and Noble during the height of shopping season to promote our Christmas concert and get donations. Also, Barnes and Noble has a program where groups can come in for one day and give coupons to shoppers so that a small percentage of whatever they buy goes to our group (in this case, the orchestra). We raised about $500 during that event.
There is some talk of us going to teach master classes to chamber groups in the public school. I'm not sure how that would work out with my job and all that. We may end up not participating in that since all of us in the quartet work.
We've also had to replace our second violinist last week, so it will take some time to train the replacement. The replacement is actually a bit of a stronger player, so we may actually start to be able to revisit the issue of hiring ourselves out sooner than we had planned. That would be a big plus 
And yes, I agree those shorts are pretty ridiculous. They had these "city shorts" for women to wear with womens' suit jackets earlier this year. I don't know if you saw them. I thought that they looked ridiculous as well, so I didn't buy any. The assinine part about that was that they were meant to be worn in the fall with tights. In the summer, skort suits are pretty popular and they look pretty good, I think. But those city shorts were  |

Unless you have funny-looking feet, than you should wear closed-toe shoes.

I break 7 of those 10 rules regularly. I don't break rules 8, 2, and 1. Dirty fingernails are nasty. I'm too lazy to tuck my shirt in anyway. And shandals are ridiculed where I come from. I'll defend my stance on the other 7.
About rule 10, it deeply offended me.  It said stay away from large fancy buckles. Newsflash: I'M FROM TEXAS! Of course I wear large fancy buckles, in Texas we put the bling bling right over our thing thing.
What's so bad about white socks?

About no tight jeans, well. I'm a rockstar whether you say so or not.
Clothes for people my size are expensive, and I hate shopping for them. So I'll stay with the holes/tears/etc.
I only have one set of shoes. And they're running shoes! (another reason I didn't break rule #1) I even wear them to church and no one notices (no one points it out at least).
For free shirts I'll just wear 'em if they're in the drawer. No point in wasting an hour debating which shirt is most fashionable.
I don't look like a nerd though... so maybe this list didn't apply to me anyway. Or is this general fashion advice? |

I think my personal requirements for a man's dress sense to be 'attractive' is:
Hygiene.
Please, please, please wear clean clothes, and don't wash so infrequently (or change your clothes so infrequently) that you carry around a noticeable smell. Same goes for smelly aftershave or cologne - if I'm olfactorily noticing you, I'm probably thinking about how soon I can increase distance between you and my nose.
Anything else, I mind less. If it's obvious that a person has spent a lot of money (as in, more than £15) on an item of clothing, I'd find that perplexing, but if they can afford it and it makes them happy, then more power to them. Same for shorts, tracksuit bottoms and sandals/socks with sandals. I might think they look unsexy, but it's not visually offensive to me. Although I'd rather know that someone was choosing to dress like that, than that they were wearing something geeky unknowingly and then wondering why people didn't find them attractive.
My personal style tends to be jeans, nice t-shirts and the odd necklace and funky earrrings. If I'm trying to make a good impression (at an interview for example) then I'll not wear glasses, but I wear them the rest of the time as they make reading more comfortable and I can see details better. Although for the most part I blend into the background, occasionally I'll find something that I really like the look of (such as a shirt or pair of trousers with a lot of beads or patches on) but that is a bit 'noticeable', and I'll wear it anyway because I like it.

Agreed whole-heartedly on the clean, clean, clean thing.
Wear what you want and do what you want at home, but if you're going out in public, clean body, hair, teeth and clothes are absolutes. Trimmed tidy nails, too. If longer hair or facial hair -- must be kept tidy.
Beyond that, I think it's situational. However, I've noticed that a tucked in shirt and a belt (if the pants/jeans have belt loops), along with non-ratty shoes make a huge difference in the same outfit. Much more together and smart looking.
I'm all for personal freedom, but the impression you make on others does count, and you've got the power to control it.

Some of these rules are reasonable. There are some I disagree with however:
1) I love long hair on guys. I love how the hair softens their features, and I am perturbed that our society doesn't accept it. I think it is gorgeous, and if I had my way every guy would grow his hair out. (Maybe my bisexuality has something to do with this?)
2) No facial hair. Huh? What's wrong with facial hair? (Although I do hate bushy mustaches.)
3) No glasses. I sometimes like guys with glasses, although it doesn't make that big of a difference. |

it's just typical that they say all the shoes to wear are shoelases and i can't do them up, velcro is comming back though i think as more shops are sellign it but it aint an item to avoid, just an item to be very careful with as black velcro shoes look rediculous

Milo from 24 has facial hair, and is simultaneously cute.
Although some facial hair such as a long unkempt beard or a scruffy moustache can be less than flattering, I don't think it should be ruled out as a general category. Same goes for glasses - they can make a person look worse or better, rather than always being a bad thing.

You sound like you need to open your mind. I am up to date with all the fashion in society. Look on the streets and in magazines and my style of fashion is good.
