I think Hebrew is a really nice-sounding language, and not as difficult to learn as one might think. It's very structured. Here's an online learning page I find quite good: http://darkwing.uoregon.edu/~ylcflx/Aleph-Bet/index.html
Though if you're a beginner you'd have to start with the alphabet (alefbet), which is for example here: http://www.njop.org/jsAlephbet/sound_main.html

Once in a college dorm I passed the room of someone I know and said something in Hebrew. He answered "אני לא מדבר עברית." Not knowing about the present tense in modern Hebrew, I took it to be progressive, and thus false Wink

I speak Hebrew, but I haven't spoken it for some time because there aren't any Israelis where I live; I try to read books so that I don't forget the language. Israelis, tell a little about yourselves!

At lo mavin Ivrit. I can translate some, but I don't know much about the verbs.

In the Bible the name for humankind is Adam (such as being named after the first man), but is that also the name that is used today? Or would it be something else?

(BTW, not Hebrew. I'm genealogically a French and Irish American.)

I don't know what "humankind" is in Hebrew, but "human" is "adam" or "ben adam."
