I'm really wondering, often, when I see the next generation of crank diet smut on internet advertising whether I've seen rock bottom or whether it's just a ledge. It was bad enough with the acai craze, then the counter acai craze, then the waitloss pictures that look about as bad as the superhuman muscle pictures. In a different genre you have the 'home refinance' adds that might as well have a comic book picture of a zombie boldly proclaiming how he or she keeps their shapely figure - "Braaaaainsss!".

In the last couple days I've been seeing the 'Eat This - Never Diet Again' and the first one I just looked at and said I don't even want to know what that is - looked like a rice-cake shaped disc of lard. Now they have pictures of a slime mold on the grass.

I'm really wondering, are we heading toward seeing a commercial oversight office in the government with respect to the internet? Is it possible that regardless of the intelligence and credulity spread that we might have people showing up at state and local poison control centers due to eating things off the grass that they shouldn't have been? I mean to prove their point 'Eat this - never diet again' there might be a lot of validity here, ie. there are many things you could eat and you'd never have to diet again, rather worms would be making a diet of you. Liquid Plumber - drink this never diet again! Uggghhh......

As the internet is international in its nature, any legislation would be very difficult to implement. Ultimately, governments can only legislate to a certain extent against the credulity and stupidity of people. Ultimately Darwin's principle's come into play and those who are dumb enough to buy into the miracle cure stuff peddled on the internet will be weeded out by their own demise. Sad but the likely outcome.

It's funny that almost all "weight loss professionals" discount meat and veg based diets like Paleo, while telling people who are too fat from eating too many carbs to EAT MORE CARBS, cut out the "fat", and go on some psycho diet pill. Then, when the hapless dieter keeps getting fatter, the dieter is chewed out for "not enough willpower".  Diet pills are big business. Simply cut simple carbs out of your diet, eat fatty meats like pork and beef (gasp! go the diet hucksters), and eat veggies to get your carbs. I did that and not only have I lost weight, my schizophrenia has gone down, meaning I hardly hear the voices now (with the help of an antipsychotic).

By the way, there's a new scam going around. People who buy diet pills online are being called up, told that they bought "narcotics", and they and their families have to turn themselves in at the federal courthouse, with something like $2000 cash as "bail". The scammers then meet them on the CH steps and take the cash.

I thought the best diet was always to eat less or at least to a level that matches your metabolism.

Oh, wow. I just went back and did that and, yeah, you're right. Thanks, I needed that.

This makes me think of a conversation I had last night with a friend of mine, this vegan yoga instructor who lives on organic veggies and flax seeds and looks half his age. We were in a noisy, crowded place, so I missed bits and pieces, but he was talking about how upset he was that hipsters had ruined kale for him. And, worse yet, he thinks they are moving towards doing the same thing with beets. :) You know, like it's some sort of conspiracy they have to steal good, simple foods from people who are really passionate about wellness and make them trendy and widely consumed by the masses.

Lol, I'll have to remind him there are far worse things being peddled to the masses than kale and beets.

That's interesting...

Is there a correlation between high-crime/high mortality neighborhoods and morbid obesity? Based on your observation here, I'd say their might very well be a causal relationship.

One definitely won't find many cookies laying on the ground that's for sure. :)

To reiterate my avatar 'C' does not stand for cabbage, it does not stand for carrots, it does not stand for cilantro - regardless of what any single-payer health system might say to the contrary.

Howbout reading the same in a NYC Stallone type voice?

"Yo!

Eat DIS. And never diet again!"

Gives it a whole 'nother meaning.

Lol!

( perhaps with a pic of an index finger pointed downward.).

I remember seeing one such ad featuring a woman with a waist the size of a pencil, grinning happily as she has measuring tape wrapped around her freakishly CG-generated tiny waist. The tagline for that was something like, "Controversial extreme skinny pill! Should it be available over the counter?"

I can't imagine anybody wanting a waist like that. It looked like something out of a torture porn movie.

It's just a click trick. The point isn't to get people to eat whatever the weird thing is (I can't figure out what it is either). The point is to get people to click on the link just to find out what the weird thing is. If they make the weird thing weird enough then people to click not just because they want to lose weight but also because they are a little curious about what the thing is. There is no way I am clicking that link. For all I know it could put malware on my computer.

I doubt oversight is possible given the international nature of the internet.

1. Eat less.
2. Exercise more.
3. No excuses.

I'd like to try the zombie diet, but I fear my cholesterol level is already too high.

The Levitical priest diet of all-you-can-eat well-done steak, lamb, and goat sounds tempting but I'd probably decline it for similar reasons. No drug-eluting stents or statins back in those days. Just reading Numbers made my arteries clench up.
