I've been an atheist since the age of 12, and while I was kind of intolerant for the first few years, I eventually learned to lighten up and not be so preachy. I figured that as long as people were willing to respect my beliefs, I would be willing to respect theirs. Live and let live, as they say. Don't try to convert me, and I won't try to convert you.

Actually it is sometimes weird to me, how much that atheists vs. religious people takes place in the US. In german area its about 50%/50% atheists and religious people, but your religious believe (or unbelieve) is simply something that is respected as a private thing. So you hardly have religious people insisting on you, about their only true religion, as well that you hardly have any atheists, trying to convince religious peoples to become atheists.

As well that when it comes to welfare and charity, that there is no real separation. Scouts do still have connections with the church, so they are often helping in church events, but in general the scout educators, try to teach you to be good humans, not to be good christs. So usually all kind of kids go there, anyway if christian or not, or atheists. Just as noone would get the idea of asking you about your religious believe, if you go to an charity organization, and offer them your help. If you want to help other people, then people are fine with it and dont really care, if you do it, because of you wanting to do so out of an social or religious wish.

I cant say if that struggles between religious people and atheists in the US, is based on many religious people being more radical and fundamentalistic, and so as well the atheist ones reacting to it, or if its a general thing of US mentality. So 99% of religious people in western europe are moderate christian, that neither do believe in that "Dinosaur is an joke of god and earth is 3000 years old." theory, nore do they much care for all the hateful stuff, written in the old testament, simply because of christianity for them being focusing on Christus = Jesus = new testament.

My sentiments exactly. I won't bother with religion until it becomes an excuse to treat people as inferior for having different beliefs. I also dislike when people use atheism, politics, race, gender, nationality, and/or science to do the same.

Does anyone think there ever a case when trying to convert people to a belief or religion is okay?

I find every aspect of religion fascinating. Unravelling the history from all the known facts, trying to take out the pure myth, just hearing that people believe such set supernatural things are around us and awaiting us is amazing.

I love the psychology of why people want to believe and who actually ends up believing what.

I have my personal beliefs pieced together from everything I see and hear and I am probably disrespectful in my questions, but just asking questions about religion is often seen as disrespectful. That is probably because the answers don't make sense!

I do not mean to offend, I mean to be honest and seek honest answers. My husband says I would have been burnt at the stake for blasphemy a few hundred years ago.

Sure, most occasions are ok. Its a sensitive subject but I think that people should always be challenged.

A lot of Christians are convinced that it's some requirement of theirs to preach their beliefs to non-believers, if that's what you're asking.

I sincerely doubt many (if any) Aspies "purposely ... slander... religious beliefs".

Religious beliefs are factually wrong, which would be enough to try to dissuade folks from them. But many religious-political intersection stories, particularly in the US, involve a level of craziness repulsive to my sensibilities. I make that known, particularly given that articulating and debating opinions is one of the main functions of political forums (like PPR).

'religious beliefs are factually wrong'

You do?.. understand friend that all rationality is based on human emotions..

And everything you are saying 'right' now..is only viewed by what you may 'think' is you.. after your emotions cued it...

So in other words nothing you say Is reality..

And ergo..none of it is factual....

ALL is illusion...

So religion is the only truth..that is true...

Think about that one for a few minutes...

if you will or care 'too'..

If you figure it out..

you understand god...
if not you do not understand god..

it's as simple as that...

And yah.. many people here do not understand GOD...

But considering that alexithymia..a disconnect between emotion and language is present in about
85% of autism spectrum disorders..that are professionally diagnosed..that is no surprise at all..

As without that connection it is extremely difficult to understand what GOD is...

As the path there is not mechanical cognition..it is completely social or empathic cognition...

And THIS IS an area that people on the spectrum do have great deficits in ....as per research that currently exists..on this empathy and social cognition issue...

So it is always an extremely interesting challenge for me to spark the real spark of light that IS gOD for anyone here..but what can i say..i like challenges..

NO problem with that in real life at all..as the light of GOD..or whatever one likes to call the essence of the one that is all..is unmistakable for one who walks in it...AND in effect IS THAT LIGHT OF WHA T most westerners describe as GOD..Christ..or the LIGHT..of LOVE..that is LIGHT...

In real life for people who are not currently experiencing challenges with cognitive empathy..and or emotional empathy..IT IS THE MOST CONTAGIOUS THING IN THE WORLD..THAT IS THE LIGHT OF GOD...

BUT AGAIN FOR THOSE WHO 'KNOW NOT WHAT THEY DO'..WHICH IS BASICALLY THOSE WHO ARE NOT blessed with that light..

One can only hope or pray..that one day they too..will walk in this eternally now BLISS THAT IS THE LIGHT OF WHAT MOST PEOPLE CALL GOD....

IT'S REAL..IT'S A FORCE..AND IT'S A POWER THAT ONE CAN ACTUALLY FEEL..AND MEASURE IN THEIR LIFE..

BUT WITHOUT IT..the experience of it that is...it simply does not exist...

And yah..that's the saddest part of it 'all' to me....

There have been times i would have given my life to share that with other people...

But nah..i have come to the conclusion..that there are some people..that simply can not share it..for whatever reason..MAYBE karma..only 'GOD' 'knows' that...

Erm, I don't think Jesus would have left being crucified alive. Even if you don't believe in God, crucifixion is pretty brutal, as it's a method of execution and not merely displaying' someone up on a pedestal, plus flogging the person beforehand (as was a standard Roman practice) , adds to the person's risk of dying. Not only this, the Roman guards have a vested interest in making sure that person died, as they could be punished severely if they messed up on the execution.

And many Islamic countries still use it today as a form of execution.

Anyway, I haven't trolled via defamation of religion, but I have gotten pissed by some arrogant turds of atheists before and pointed out stuff about atheistic belief that carried to it's logical extreme is often squirmy subject matter, because it ultimately can't be proved to be immoral as there is no objective standard of right and wrong other then what man makes up. I did this not because I care a whit about converting someone to a religion, but because I can't stand arrogant people. I don't mind atheists in general, but not the snotty "I'm better then you' types.

I'm an atheist and I couldn't care less if someone else believes in unicorns, the tooth fairy, god or the easter bunny and wouldn't bother to convince them otherwise and vice versa.
However, once someone brings up the topic, I wouldn't lie and try to be polite and friendly, but direct, so that's something others might still categorize as offensive. I'd never bash anyone intentionally though.

I was watching TV earlier on with my grandfather, and this ad came on for the miniseries "The Bible", and the first thing he said was "I can't believe people believe in this stuff." Even though I'm an atheist, I was kind of shocked to hear him say this. I sort of understood what he meant, because there's a lot of stuff in the Bible that is rather nonsensical, but at the same time, I can see why some people would believe in it.

My view of the Bible is that it's a mixture of fiction and historical events; mainly fiction though. Like I don't believe any of the supernatural stuff (dealing with god, demons, miracles, etc.) is true, but I do believe that Jesus of Nazareth was a real person, and that he was a revolutionary of some kind with some decent ideas.

Believing that Jesus was likely a historical figure does not necessarily lead to believing in the Bible.

Well actually there are a lot of myths circulating around about crucifixion..For one thing.. the death took days to happen..and it was from eventual suffocation..from losing the ability to breathe..at the angle of hanging..

And most interestingly there is at least some compelling evidence that Jesus did physically survive the event..which is technically possible..and lived hIS life out in Kashmir per the BBC documentary youtube video presented here now:

And just for fun.. a little known fact.. LED ZEPPELIN'S..MOST MYSTERIOUS SONG..DRUG INDUCED IN PRODUCTION...WAS ACTUALLY ABOUT JESUS..AND KASHMIR..AND HIS RETURNING AGAIN...

YA SEE..Jimmy Page..was a big follower of Aleister Crowley..and Aleister Crowley..was a prophetic individual himself..

Not many people know the real truth about ALeister Crowley either...

Oh GOD PROPHETS CAN BE so misunderstood by the so called...

common folks...

Jesus and Aleister Crowley are very much one and the same individual..per the production of their efforts....

YAH..Aleister Crowley is perhaps the most influential man to ever walk the work AND WORLD in what his efforts produced in the mass communication of world wide popular music...

And that influence is more powerful than ever in music today..

Perhaps..on a world wide basis..

Even far more powerful than the historical man Jesus..on a long term basis...

Well yaH...see.. 'god's' team don't discriminate against any

one..rich or poor...ostracized or famed...

They are basicALLy the same...

in 'GODS EYES'!

I think that a discussion about what a person's beliefs are and why is fine. Same with debating. You can invite me to church or tell me of your opinion of Jesus Christ (or any other religion's figures/tenets), but when you go beyond that, I consider it harrassment. If I feel harrassed, then I have no remorse about combating what I perceive as fallacy, and feel that others should be free to do the same if they feel attacked in any way.
