Well friend.. many religions do not do this as at all..

For just one example.. the practices of Zen Budhists..that there is some evidence that the real historical Jesus may have been aligned with...

Are incredibly helpful to maintain human homeostasis..and that is an extremely hard commodity to come by in our fast paced cultures...

This is the real stuff of bliss that the real human Jesus was talking about in real life..according to some evidence leaning that way and even in some of the scriptures that made it to our modern day...

People get this s**t wrong..to control folks with fear..whether it is to keep women from f*****g whoever they want...

Or to keep folks keeping on coming to church service to fund the church employees salaries...

But.. the essence of truth that the true religions of love still teach...

Can never be changed by any selfish human being...(s)

Who are only looking out for themselves...

And as an anthropologist..i often visit churches to become a participant observer...

As religions and their effect on homo sapiens..sapiens..

Has always been a special interest of mine..ever since i got my degree back in 1983..and actually three in social sciences interdisciplinary..anthropology..and health science.....

Well.. i recently went to two new churches..

a first assembly of GOD..

and good ole boy small southern baptist church...

Moreover than not..the new breed of priests in my catholic church.. that i was actually raised in.. only preach love and hope from the pulpit..and
at least at my church.. will admonish any deacon for oppressing anyone..even homosexuals...

But in the Assembly of GOD church the overriding message is that tithing is everything...

And making fun of the Muslim and Buddhist religions...

And oh my GOD the southern Baptist church last night i went..to last night...

Was the f*****g ignorant fire and brim stone stuff about even if you are 101 years old in a nursing home...

and ya tell us ya do not want to be saved...

We think you are going to hell..eternal hell..much longer than 101 years....

And oh my god..they had the audacity..to even talk about such foolishness from the pulpit...

I wanted to vomit just a little bit..but i held my anthropologist participant observer smile...

To keep the folks giving me their fully honest opinions about their way of religion....

That one was the type of religion my wife was raised in..and i've had to assure her through our entire marriage...

That oh my god..f**k no..you ain't gonna burn in this imaginary place called hell forever..if ya thought something bad about ya neighbor..

Just try to do what you feel is ethical the next time around...

Well for all practical intents and purpose...

Modern culture with all the information available at the finger tips..and all the dopamine stimulating activity..is in effect killing church participation...

At the southern baptist church i went to last night..there was about 90% of the folks over 60...

And zero percent under 30 except for one little girl..tagged along with her parents...

Granted it was a gospel singing..but still..

There is no longer anything there of use per true reward that society cannot meet except...

And a big exception that is truly sad...

Is that truly ethical churches..can provide an excellent source of real human connections through out the life span..

that a person without an extended family may find no other place in life..in a dancing with the stars..and superwalmart society..overall....

These type of human connections are being lost across the globe..

And in Japan where virtual reality..has over taken the real world..per real human connections in flesh and blood life..

The clean up crews come to clean up what is left of solitary old folks...

That have no REAL HUMAN CONNECTIONS in real life..

to even know

these folks

even

exist...

Human beings are social animals...

This is the saddest thing possible for a social animal..in full reality of what they are evolved for..

To be left alone in real flesh and blood life...

That is the one thing..that churches can overcome...

For folks in real life..without those extended families...

And it is a life or death thing for some folks..as it could make the difference between someone checking up on someone..who is sick...

OR NOT.

THIS IS AN EXTREMELY COMPLEX FULL SOCIAL ISSUE.

THERE ARE NO EASY ANSWERS...

LIKE IT IS JUST THIS

OR THAT.

PERIOD..REALLY

I look at the Old Testament as more of a history of the people of Israel. I think the people of that time believed that God killed the other people for them so that is what they wrote. I think that God may have been protecting the people of Israel, but I would not say that he committed genocide.

You have to read the post before that one. The implication was that the flood was God committed genocide. But there have been many floods throughout history. Is every flood God committing genocide?

Whatever. I don't really care what you think. Obviously you don't have any more to contribute to the conversation.

The flood in the Noah's Ark story was a deliberate act by God, to punish or purge sinful people or something, and it was worldwide. That's two very important differences from modern floods. (Not that I believe Noah's Ark story, it is quite far-fetched).

@ Wow
There have been many floods, ice ages, catastrophic fires, etc many disastrous natural events. But the Biblical flood is described as a deliberate act of genocide of all living things other than those protected aboard the ark.

Now can I go back to holding my head in my arms and rocking back and forth.

PS For those who believe in this story what did god do to rid the waters of animals who can regulate their salt intake eg Bull Sharks. And did Noah carefully bring on board two of every pathogen, bacteria etc.

Yes I think the flood was the ultimate genocide. The poor animals got it too!

It also showed God to be particular and exclusive with those he favored.

Any attempt to rationalize the flood makes no sense. If it had really happened we would see a horrible genetic bottleneck in every species, if two of each are even able to procreate without inbreeding (most species probably not). And good that Noah put all the marsupials and the polar bears and the dodos back in their original habitat too, very nice of him.

Please, PLEASE respond to my logical deduction of religion:

1. The Bible speaks of a God who committed genocide (by destroying the cities of Sodoma and Gomora, killing everyone or nearly everyone in the cities).

2. People of the Bible, those who worship the God in the Bible, believes God is doing the right thing.

3. People who believes God is doing the right thing, believe that when God destroyed Sodoma and Gomora, killing many people, God did the right thing.

4. People believing in God of the Bible, worship the God of the Bible.

5. People who worship the God of the Bible, worship the God who killed many people (genocide).

6. People who believe in the Bible believes in genocide.

This leave us with these options only:

1. Either you believe that the stories are true or false.
2. If you believe they are true, you ARE worshipping a God who committed genocide. Thus, you ARE in favor of genocide.
3. If you believe they are untrue, you are NOT worshipping God of the Bible.

In general I am an atheist. Still I think you forgot a major think. What you are talking about is the old testament, which is the foundation of jewish religion. Christian believe instead is based on the Testament of Christ (Thats why its called christianity. ^^), which is the new testament. The major stuff about the new testament is the basic change of the religion, from an typical ancient god that asked humans for sacrificies to worship him (as example the sacrifice of every firstbirn and similar stuff) to a god that is instead sacrificing his own son to humanity, and that is forgiving to humans.

I know that specially radical christians of obscure sects love to tell phrases of the old testament and to refer to it, when they want to express their hateful thoughts. But to do so, is simply to ignore the fact, that the main part of the new testament is about going new ways, or simply about "What would Jesus do." not Noah, David, Moses, or any other cruel old pervert guy, doing mad stuff.

You ignore my original point that the people at that time interpreted it as coming from God, but it was really just as natural as any other natural disaster that ever happened. It would be like today if a church thought that God was going to wipe out an entire town so they built an underground bunker, and then a hurricane came a couple of days later.

@wowexist - Just very curious about the framework of your Christianity, wondered if you wouldn't mind answering a few questions?

Do you believe the bible is the word of God?

Do you believe that only the parts you agree with are those worth basing your faith on?

Would your view of a natural flood make the Old testament just a story and Noah just a fictitious character a legend, the Odysseus of his time perhaps?

Is everything else true, but just the whole message from God, God created flood, God designed ark, God Guided animals and God decided genocide bit make believe?

Does God exist at all in any of the books then? did he speak to Noah, Moses, Abraham, Adam?

Is Noah a holy prophet, a lunatic or a myth; perhaps the old testament from Genesis to Deuteronomy just a collection of folk tales an myths?

If that is false yet christians believe the bible is the word of God and is the Christian God, is your concept of God not that of the bible, but of your own creation

Do you feel the bible contains stories of value for spiritual guidance but are just parables and collected legends?

Or is just the new testament true and Jesus was real and the son of a God, but the God of the old testament was legends and stories and not his Father?

Would not the oldest most sacred part of the book be the most accurate? the closest to God's true word, the book that is the core of 3 major world religions.

This is the old testament and therefore would not the new testament be more likely to be unrelated to the original subject matter?

That bit added on later by a judaic splinter cell, that had found the much foretold Messiah (again) that Simon dude had not really worked out?

So, Just going on some basic rational thinking. Taking into regard Judaism's age, thus the age of Torah, the spread of the original stories, similarity to sumerian myths and legends that date back even further. Then the age of Christianity's Split plus Constantine's need to hide the Roman empire and disguise it as a church?

Then promoting a fringe group religion and using their faith to govern them by their souls instead of bodies, thus maintaining Roman control for millennia? (roman being the concept, the way of life and philosphy; not a people, anyone could be a Roman, most were at one point)

Just asking like?
