Hi,

I'm a practicing software engineer with a masters in Computer Engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology. My masters allows me to implement software, but not be part of the design team for the algorithms that I'm interested in. (Machine Learning). For that, I'd need a Ph.D.

I have a good relationship with my Machine Learning professor who would accept me in the program. More importantly, he would allow me to pursue it part-time while I work full-time. The only problem is that I would need funding. I'm currently paying off student loans, so it leaves me little wiggle room to fund it myself. I can easily learn any material I want online, but companies still require a Ph.D before I can get into the meat of my interest.

Does anyone know of some scholarships that people on the spectrum can apply for Ph.Ds? I don't really even need a full scholarship, just one that could offset the tuition costs to a significant degree. Does anyone also have an imaginative solution where I could get outside funding, saying working as a freelancer or whatnot?

Daniel

I don't have any answers, however, congratulations on your success ! :P

My education is in Computer Engineering also.

I was told that when I graduated that companies like Intel want a graduate degree in CE , however, I am surprised companies want a PhD.

Further ..

One option if you did not mind getting side tracked for a couple years is to work as a government patent examiner. That is where I work. They are always hiring C.E. people. (I got a 40k signing bonus when I agreed to work there, but they stopped the signing bonuses because the economy got bad).

In two years, you are allowed to work out of your home, so after a few years you could live on campus when you do your PHD.

The starting pay for a M.S. is like 80k/year.
