Thanks for your input, it's a lot easier to check facts here than just trawling the web. I like Italy but I would never, ever claim to understand what goes on there.

Same here in NZ. In fact our Ministry of Education which manages and funds our schooling system has published two studies on the efficacy of ABA which recommend it, however they say they cannot afford it. They do however pay for substantial teacher and teacher aide hours for our son, so we have arranged for these people to have some basic training that we covered the costs for so that they can at least continue some of his programme while he is at school. Pragmatic compromise there.
