Off topic, sorry:

I'm really glad the above poster doesn't want to deal with the psychiatric system. I've seen it destroy lives.

Age: 28

Location: Upper Midwest

Hobbies and Interests: Reading, writing, video games, Internet, listening to music.

Why are you here? I am on the Autism Spectrum (they don't seem to distinguish Asperger's anymore) with Generalized Anxiety Disorder and Major Depressive Disorder. At least that's what my therapist said. It sounds pretty much on the money. I thought I could find out more on this site, so I joined.

When were you diagnosed?(skip if you don't have a disorder): tentatively at age 12, again at age 28. Too little and too late to make much of a difference IMO.

Favorite subjects: History and English.

Year/Grade: Graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Journalism.

Favorite music: Death metal, black metal, thrash metal, rock, 80s pop, many others.

Books: Fear & Loathing on the Campaign Trail '72, Addie Pray, The Vandals of Treason House, The Morgaine Saga, The Smartest Guys in the Room.

TV shows: Daria, Mystery Science Theater 3000, Cardcaptor Sakura, Digimon, The Red Green Show, Garfield & Friends, Gidget.

Movies: 12 Angry Men, Finding Forrester, Deceived, Paper Moon, Commando, A Christmas Carol (1951).

Do you like sports? If so, which ones?: Not an athlete, but I like to watch football and hockey. Professional wrestling and some MMA, men's and women's.

Family: Mom and two younger brothers. Dad lives far away now, haven't seen him or spoken to him in years.

Clothing: Casual and plain with the occasional metal, wrestling, or MLP shirt.

How did you find this website?: Found it on a search engine while researching Autism.

Job: Hotel clerk.

Plans for the future?: To go on existing with as little pain and stress as I can manage.

Any comments?: RC Cola beats Pepsi or Coke any day.

What is your first name?
I'd rather not say at the moment.

Age:
20

Location:
somewhere in the United States.

Hobbies and Interests:
Video games, Designing super heroes, Mathematics

Why are you here?
Not only do I have Aspergers, I want to advocate for people with ASD. Like many with Aspergers or Autism, I had a rough time growing up. It got so bad at times, years have passed and I still have not fully recovered from the constant emotional trauma. I don't want to sound like I am hamming things up, but I couldn't think of a more fitting term. I realized that the ridicule and teasing was likely because of the behaviors I exhibited due to aspergers. I feel that if more people know what we go through and are made aware of why we act the way we do, they might be more tolerant of those social errs we don't mean to make. But before I can be a true advocate, I need to know more about other people with ASD, not just my own experiences.

When were you diagnosed?(skip if you don't have a disorder):
A long time ago. when I was 3? 4? 5? I don't remember.

Favorite subjects:
That's more complex than you would think. I am BEST at math, but I LIKE computer programming better. I also like psychology, and learning about other cultures is also fascinating. I guess it comes down to the individual classes. A bad teacher or a heavy workload can ruin the classes with the best subjects.

Year/Grade:
Junior

Favorite music:
alt. rock. mainly skillet and imagine dragons

Books:
not much of a reader

TV shows/Movies:
Mostly informational reality tv like Mythbusters or Dirty Jobs. I also like home video comedies like Top 20 Funniest and World's Dumbest. Don't judge me.

Instrument:
I used to play the piano, but it felt more like work than play, so I stopped.

Do you like sports?
not really, no.

Family: Its big. Really big.

Clothing: whatever feels good to wear. mostly cargos and T-shirts

How did you find this website? Found it looking up things about Aspergers.

Job: Rather not bring that up now.

Plans for the future? Working on it.

What is your first name? T F

Age: 28

Location: Western Canada

Hobbies and Interests: So many - video games, books, FILM, sports, history, war, science, health, music of all kinds except for dark things or raucous heavy metal or screeching things that are too loud, traveling the world, learning, hiking, chess, board games, food, nature, amazing sensory experiences (feeling like I'm Spiderman), characters, cartoons, art and striking visual images, but absolutely nothing DARK, dangerous, angry, or evil, it must be positive.

Why are you here? To learn why I feel very different in the world and to see other people's experiences and maybe get some help and tips on living a happy and successful life.

When were you diagnosed?(skip if you don't have a disorder): Not ever officially diagnosed, but sort of confirmed that I share a ton of Asperger traits but not all, but definitely feel like I suffer from the communication side of things. I keep trying but it doesn't work out the way I want it to.

Favorite subjects: English, Science, History, Philosophy, Geography!!, Creative writing was cool too.

Year/Grade: Have a Masters in Science from the UK, in history. and an honours BA.

Favorite music: Bluegrass, Classical, Jazz, Classic Rock, Some pop, some hip-hop, gospel, new age, national anthems, german polka,

Books: Several - too many to list, but love dystopian fiction, science fiction, survival guides, books of maps,

TV shows/Movies: Again, dozens, X-Files, Big Bang Theory, Cartoons (Spiderman, Ninja Turtles, Batman, Looney Tunes), and in the film section The Sting, Star Wars (all).

Instrument: Piano! Played the cello growing up and a little bass guitar and can do a few guitar chords and easy songs.

Do you like sports? Absolutely love sports and do many of them: skiing, biking, golf, tennis, ultimate frisbee, cricket, basketball, swimming, ball hockey, volleyball (until injury), bowling, baseball.

Family: A small but loving and kind family.

Clothing: sweat pants are preferred and a nicely fitting t-shirt with some cool graphic design on it that doesn't itch. Suits are annoying but they do look smashing occasionally. Nothing too tight, sometimes jeans are unbearable. It just hit me how fussy I was many years ago about clothing, nothing ever felt like it fit right and I hated tags in the neck area.

How did you find this website? Googled it.

Job: Working in good ole insurance, but do not want that to last for too long.

Plans for the future? To make use of my talents and gifts, creatively speaking, work with children and travel the world, nailing down concrete things for these have been very tough though.

Any comments?
Curious to know about Aspergers, cause it seems like its different in every person who has it to some degree. Any help with Aspergers and managing extreme emotions like depression/anxiety would be wonderful as these two puppies are awful. AND, any help about constantly feeling like you're not performing well enough in the world because you can't have successful relationships or do things without major stress.

Would also love to here people and their stories about accepting Aspergers, telling others and how friends and other people received it, like were they accepting and how did it change relationships and lives? Is it better to "come out" or try and navigate the world one person at a time?

Thanks for reading y'all.

What is your first name? Erin

Age: 42

Location: Madison, Wisconsin

Hobbies and Interests: Travel, Reading, Hiking, Animals, Eastern Philosophy, Dance

Why are you here? Because I was recently diagnosed after living 42 years with something I didn't understand. I want to connect with like minds and understand myself better.

When were you diagnosed?(skip if you don't have a disorder): one week ago.

Favorite subjects: Science, Art, Writing, Psychology, Philosophy

Year/Grade: Graduated from high school in 1990. Attempted college several times but had difficulties. I went to specialty college for Ayurvedic Medicine and completed that along with extensive self study/education.

Favorite music: Electronic, House, Dance/Pop, Singer-Song Writer, Blues, Soul, Modern Folk, World. Kaskade, Avicii, Samantha James, Thievory Corporation, Calvin Harris, Mary J. Blige, Norah Jones, Natalie Merchant, KT Tunstall, Stevie Nicks, BB King, ZZ Hill, Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gay, Michael Jackson, and many many more.

Books: Shantaram, Memoirs of a Gesha, Secret Life of Bees, Catcher in the Rye, Be Here Now, A New Earth, Anything by Paulo Coehlo, Rumi, and Walt Whitman.

TV shows/Movies: Walking Dead, House of Cards, Breaking Bad/What Dreams May Come, Good Fellas, Scarface, Pulp Fiction, Avatar, Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, The Matrix, What the Bleep do we Know?, The Future of Food.

Instrument: Guitar

Do you like sports? Competitive sports..not so much. Soccer and Basketball can be fun to watch at a live game. I like a good game of pool or air hockey.

Family: Difficult family. Mom has Bi-polar and Borderline Personality Disorder. Father passed away last year after battling cancer for 7 months. :( Lost one of my brothers to a car accident when I was 13. I have one brother and one sister who I get along with but we are not very close. I raised my nephew (son of my brother who passed away) from the time he was 8-18. I believe he has Asperger's too.

Clothing: Comfortable, soft, casual...a touch hippy. I like soft cotton and linen.

How did you find this website? searching the web

Job: Ayurvedic Practitioner and Holistic Nutrition and Lifestyle Coach

Plans for the future? Eventually be able to buy some acreage in nature somewhere beautiful and amazing, grow and raise a good amount of our own food, live off the grid as much as possible while still being comfortable, and still make a good enough living to afford travel and some pleasure conveniences and indulgences. Entertaining the idea of having a small retreat center or B & B. Write books and give workshops. Simplify my life, find some peace with myself, and discover the joys of life again. Live a long life with my husband and, if we are so blessed, one child.

Any comments? I am somewhat relieved to finally have a diagnosis. But now what? I would like to spread awareness so that people like me don't slip through the cracks and spend their lives trying to cope on their own. I've done a pretty good job, all things considered, but it has been a living hell at times. I am finally just starting to truly accept myself. It has taken a lot of years to get here. I'm tired of trying to control my every thought and action. I still have so much to learn about Asperger's. It is interesting reading other peoples stories. It helps.
