Though I loved his first assistant, I thought Monk's second assistant was better.

B.J. Hunnicutt replaced 'Trapper McIntyre, Colonel Potter replaced Henry Blake, and Major Charles WInchester replaced Frank Burns in the M*A*S*H TV series. I think all three were improvements.

I agree.

And also the Second Doctor on Doctor Who was better than the First. (And Eleven was better than Ten.)

I agree!! You know, it's funny cuz I didn't dislike any of the originals, really----except, maybe, for "Frank"----he was PATHETIC!! !!----but, now, when I watch reruns, the first 3 were BORRRR-RING!! !

I know these aren't "characters"----and I know Katie wasn't the first, but I liked Meredith Viera MUCH BETTER than Katie Couric on "The Today Show"! !

10 was better than 9 in Doctor Who (still loved 9!!).
Do actors count? Michael Gambon was a better Dumbledore than Richard Harris.

Yes. The original question was actually about actors.

I disagree. I'd have liked to see Harris' character get darker as the series drew on, but Gambon needed to draw more from him IMO.

I thought the following have outperformed William Hartnell as The Doctor:
Patrick Troughton, John Pertwee, Tom Baker, Peter Davidson, Paul McGann, John Hurt, Christopher Eccelston, David Tennant, Matt Smith, and Peter Capaldi.

I also thought the following outperformed their direct successor: Patrick Troughton, John Pertwee, Tom Baker, Sylvester McCoy, Paul McGann, either John Hurt or Christopher Eccleston, David Tennant, Matt Smith, and probably Peter Capaldi

Here's a logic puzzle for you: is it possible to determine who my favourite Doctor is from the information provided? What about least favourite?

Is your favourite Tom Baker and your least favourite Colin Baker? However, because there is no 13, Capaldi might be your favourite, but I'm going to stick with Baker because of your "probably"
