Clean it? I do not even touch it. Since I was a small child I have always had a horribly irrational fear that it would "unbutton" and all my guts would spill out on the floor. I know how crazy it sounds.

My wife always thought this was hilarious and dispelled the notion that this could ever happen. Then a friend of ours had to have surgery because his had come undone and was "leaking". It rather freaked me out.

Now you've made me very uneasy. Do you thinks it's more likely if it's an innie or an outtie?

That's scary! How did he "unbutton" his? Did it just happen by itself?

I think I've heard many times since my childhood that you had better keep your hands off your belly button because it easily gets infected or something, which could lead to a serious problem. I cannot remember the exact reason. I have touched mine and some yukky stuff was there. I hear that it's the mixture of dead skin and dust etc and everyone has it in there. Some bacteria surely live there, too, but they usually don't do harm.

i don't usually go near it, i often forget it is there, but i am a bit curious sometimes. i am very careful not to pull on it too much, or put my finger in my mouth or any orifice after "inspecting" it.

they are likely not actual knots, as people can get umbilical hernias, usually from heavy lifting or multiple pregnancies and nothing spills out.

belly button, or chest defects can occur in newborns when the organs do not return to the abdominal cavity before birth.

Just thinking about it, let alone touching it will send me into a frenzy. I like being touched in general but I hate, hate, hate being touched on the ribs, adams apple or belly button. All three will instantly send me into a panic!
