@Kyle- Murihiku is pretty close with his guess. 'Whelmed' is just a word I made up. It means that I don't get overwhelmed too often, but I am regularly well on the way to it, so I called that 'whelmed'. It is a word that gets used quite frequently in our house.

Ah Murihiku - you're one of those are you? Those nicely tanned people who make fun of me just because I am pale? I used to get called 'milk bottle' during the summer at school (and this was by other English people). Kinder people (usually older ones) refer to me as a 'typical English rose'. My old school friend just decided that I must be half vampire. :P

Or an aristocrat from the 1700's and 1800's who actually ate tiny amounts of arsenic to keep their skin white.

....and put lead paint on their face to help with the same.

Crazy!

i was whelmed. i got a headache after being flipped upside down tons of times at 121 km/h, also dreading a ride, in a tightly packed queue with screaming and loud "happy birthday!" singing.

i actually tan quite well, against my will. :P

I had not heard of Japanese teeth-blackening.....ugh.

I thought the Vikings' tooth-filing and painting was quite bad enough.

Oi, not me personally. For starters, I'm not in the habit of saying random things to complete strangers. Besides, I'd never make fun of you, Mooms ... well, aside from every other time that I've made fun of you ? but that's different. :P As a (relatively) light-skinned Māori, people do comment that I'm fairly well tanned. It also means I don't get as many non-white comments as people with darker skin (like my sisters) sometimes do. It doesn't actually happen that often, but having lived here for over twenty years means that we've still copped it a few times.

Yeah, it's bloody wasteful! Keep that stuff in the rivers and beaches; don't just randomly drop it on our heads!

it could have been a means to obscure a lady's mouth expressions. pearly whites were evocative of demons.
must have tasted awful.

20 years ago, when I was a SOP in #worldchat (those bygone days when # meant what it is supposed to mean), I met Australians who kept saying 'Oi.' I thought they were glad I was there.
