Who else is excited for this game? It's in pre alpha right now, but it looks extremely promising.
You can walk around inside your ship, it has real Newtonian physics, accurate damage models, FPS elements, a single player campaign, and a multi player persistant universe. The game is being made by Chris Roberts, the creator of Wing Commander.
You'll be free to fly around the Galaxy, trade, fight, customize your ship, or even crew a large space battleship with your friends.
I don't know about the rest of you, but that sounds like my dream game. :)

I've always been intrigued by the concept of games like this, but never really gotten into any of them. The closest I've been is Star Raiders on the Atari 2600, and Star Voyager on the NES (which I never got very far in, but enjoyed).

I recommend X3: Terran Conflict, from Egosoft. it's cheap on Steam.
It's a slow paced space sim, but it's very rewarding. You can build your own fleets, and space stations.
The game has a working simulated economy, and the dogfighting is quite enjoyable.

Or, if you prefer a faster pace, you could try X: Rebirth, also from Egosoft.
The space sim market is kind of limited at the moment, but Elite Dangerous, No Man's Sky and (of course) Star Citizen are all stepping up to fill the void. :)

This game with the occulus rift is one thing I'm really looking forward to in life. I want to have a lot of mellow nights relaxing to ambient space music while I mine and run trade missions...maybe sometimes taking shortcuts through messy pvp sectors, whilst doing my best to avoid those nasty adrenaline-filed, space-pirate, rage-fiilled, nerd junkies from hell...it's going to be glorious with an occulus rift, they'll never have my precious space booty of rare minerals!

i also want to buy a fancy HOTAS joystic, I'm thinking this one maybe:

http://www.amazon.com/Mad-Catz-Saitek-H ... B00HHAIY72

so many buttons.....drooool.

I want a joystick with force feedback though, but nobody seems to make them anymore, and it seems questionable if star-ctizen will support force feedback, but who knows, maybe it will get patched in eventually.

I urge against a HOTAS. It will not be ideal for star citizen. Use dual joystick and pedals. 6DOF flight can only be performed with a dual stick and pedal setup and that is really what you want to be able to do in a physics-accurate flight model.

The X55 has had terrible reviews due to their bad quality control. In the past 8~12 years Saitek and Thrustmaster have been bought out by really crappy companies and their quality has plummeted as their prices and hype (using the brand name) has increased.

You can buy Sidewinder Force Feedback 2 joysticks off E-bay and Amazon ...they're well worth their price. Ive had mine for 12 years and it works as if it was new. It uses hall sensors which give it perfect tracking accuracy and zero friction/wear of internal components and motors (not springs) to center the stick and of course, for force feedback. The motor-center and tension control of the stick via motor works even if force feedback is disabled.

TM1600 sticks also use hall sensors and are very cheap... but they use springs to center so its not as good.

I'm using my MS FF2 Sidewinder and a cheap 30 dollar mad catz cyborg 1.0 (can be used left handed) along with CH rudder pedals. My controls scheme is set to mimic helicopter controls so I do have full 6DOF flight capability that is very intuitive.

SabbraCadabra: Star Voyager! OMG that was the ONLY NES game I ever liked!! !

The ending credits were SO corny though:

Look up the demo of the LEAP controller and Oculus Rift ... literally you can use your fingers to interact with the cockpit controls IF the cockpit is 3D interactive (which star citizen's at the moment is not).

It mean you need to display two pictures at 120 FPS while running shader to account for the lenses distortion and chromatic aberration on a game that is meant to "show up" the power of PCs. http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/video-games/columns/experienced-points/12305-Hands-On-With-the-Oculus-Rift-How-It-Works
So the question is; are you ready to spent more than 10000$ for a computer?

aw, but that one doesn't look as fancy...i'll be honest, I really like things with lots of buttons and I'm a sucker for aesthetics.

Although I am poor so I think I would have to consider that one as an alternative. Plus I'd imagine it would be hard to remember where all the buttons are with a rift strapped to my head.

WOW, that leap motion that thing only costs 80 dollars?! The future is here lol, although a quick google search revealed it has only been sporadically talked about in the SC forums. However, perhaps that too, shall be added!

Gah, as soon as I get excited about something there's always a naysayer!

How about I play with everything on LOW?! I'm sure star citizen will still look fine and run fine!

im running arena commander alpha module with an AMD phenom 2 x4 955 3.2ghz, 16gb ram and a 7870 2gb vid card...at max detail and 2560x1080 resolution with no issues. This is a medium-low end system and the alpha isnt even optimized.

I found a video, that shows off some of the damage states in the game.
It's crazy how realistic it is.

For sure. :D I look forward to limping back to my hanger, minus a wing. It really makes things feel immersive.
By the way, for those of you who don't know, Star Citizen is in the 2015 Guinness World Records book, for being the single most crowd funded thing, ever. Pretty amazing. 8)

Is there any way to try this game without paying for it? I am happy to pay for it but my PC is not the newest and I don't want to drop $50 or so on it unless I can first ensure myself that it will run well for me. It looks cool but when I went to its web site as near as I could tell the only way to try it is to pay first.
