Here's an interesting comment from the July 2007 issue of Esquire. In an article about the new movie sequel, Evan Almighty, the writer suggests that Steve Carell has usurped Jim Carrey's role as comedy king of Hollywood for reasons that sound almost like NT traits winning out over aspie quirkiness:
"Carrey was the main reason why Fun with Dick and Jane was anything but. The mildly exaggerated tics and neuroses of middle-class malehood that come naturally to Carell are nearly inaccessible to Carrey; like Robin Williams, he needs to be either On or Off."
Or maybe being extraordinarily goofy enabled him to win friends without having to figure out how to fake those other more subtle behaviors... |

| I find Jim Carrey way more funny than Steve Carell. Always have. I do think that a lot of Carrey's recent comedies have sucked, though, but that was usually due to the scripts. In my opinion, "Bruce Almighty" was terrible in spite of Carrey, not because of him. "Evan Almighty" just looks atrocious. |

| Agreed, his recent comedies are terrible. He's a good 'serious' actor, i don't know why he doesn't stick to more serious roles nowadays. He seemed to be going in that direction when he did Man On The Moon and The Truman Show. His performance in Man On The Moon is fantastic. I doubt it's because he can't get the parts (especially after The Eternal Sunshine). |

The Truman Show and Man on the Moon are two excellent films. I think Jim Carrey is a very underated dramatic actor. I do agree that his most recent films have been just awful. I loved him in the first Ace Ventura movie. I especialy liked him in In Living Color. Great show! I loved the episode where Carrey plays GHW Bush going to a mexican dinner and eating bad Guac and getting the runs |

Honestly, I've never EVER been interested in any Steve Carell movie. And honestly, I don't find him funny -- just basically tedious.
Robin Williams is a very good dramatic actor, too. _________________ "We're an anarcho-syndicalist commune." |

| I always think of Jim Carrey and Robin Williams getting more critical acclaim for there dramatic roles. So it shows they can be pretty versatile. We think of these two comics as animated so that is what goes often. I know that they do come from some tough times in real life and even deal with depression and such and therefore can numb it with there slapstick and out-of-control humour in public view. But because of there private lives can relate to playing more dramatic roles. Like Carrey in The Truman Show or Williams in Awakenings or Good Will Hunting which earned him an Oscar. |

It's almost a shame that Carrey is pretty good as straight actor because of what happened to Robin Williams and Steve Martin when they started to go serious. It would be just too awful to lose Carrey too. Or does this always happen to comic actors in Hollywood ?
I saw a youtube of him at an awards/lifetime ceremony for Meryl Streep , and he was so wonderful in exaggerated mimic mode.
Why does he have to be anything apart from funny? |

That movie "The Number 23" was atrocious. I think it's gotta be hard for Mr. Carrey to find the right roles for him, and maybe out of boredom or necessity, chooses roles that can't capitalize on his wiry tension. If he's gonna play a dramatic role, he's gotta have the right security blanket i.e. the right director, script, and vision. I guess every troubled, strange, or weird actor needs that security blanket.
Steve Carrell doesn't really bother me that much. He's like a Jim Carrey on serous anti-depressants. I can recognize the quirks, but they're really subdued--and maybe that's his niche.
Heh, I'd like to see a movie with Jim Carrey and Robin Williams together. Funnier (or maybe not) if it'd be like Heat where Pacino and Deniro only meet face to face for one, all-too brief but quite tasty, scene in the movie. |

Its interesting how some comedians can adapt to dramatic roles, like Tom Hanks. Who is more versitle than Tom?
I think its this- The comedic actor can do the "twilight zone" stories and chick flicks.
The stories that are too strange for the seriuos leading guys.
Since the comedic actor is already a diverse character, he/she [and there aren't enough shes, come on Tina Fey, make a movie already!] and can survive a couple unsuccessful releases.
The problem is that for many comic actors, they often can't completely depart from the character they built thier careers on. Although some are trying cause they need to re-invent themselves to be marketable.
take Will Ferrell, this has to be the most versitle comedy actor who isnt getting many seriuos roles. I think Will could have done Castaway. Ferrell, like Jim Carey getting The Truman Show, (wich was the first film I liked Carrey in), got Stranger Than Fiction, (the first film I liked Ferrell in), wich was a "Twilight Zone" film that he plays straight but has opportunities to subtly include his comedic skills in effectively. Something Brad Pitt could not do as well.
The worst thing that could happen to a comedic actor is to get cast as Batman.
