Ok this is really just more of something to comfort me but maybe others can relate. I have been luck in that I have and can keep a job. I have also been lucky in that many people at work like me. The issue is that today (my birthday) they wanted to take me to breakfast. That would be fine with the four or five people I am most comfortable with but 13 people showed up. I could have probably survived this also if two things had not happened.
1. They made me set at the head of the table all alone and in everyone's sight.
2. The person I am most comfortable with and that understands could not set anywhere near me. He did arrange to set at the foot of the table totally in my line of sight but there was a window behind him and I could not see him.

So the upshot is that I survived and did not melt down. Although I had to stim with my hands. The issue is I am still totally shaken and physically shaking and it is still an hour and half before I can escape to lunch.

Anyway just needed to get this horror written down so that I could start to calm down. Smile

Give yourself a big pat on the back, well done. I'd look at it as a postive from now on. you've got through it.

Well done for getting through it! I think that in itself is very impressive and you should congratulate yourself.

Although I don't have any real social-phobia, I do have a phobia about eating in front of people (clumsiness, spilled food, knocked over drinks, what to do if someone asks me something just as I've taken a bite of food, keeping conversation going etc etc etc - I'd rather just eat alone thank you!) and I think I would have found it a real endurance test.

Oh and happy birthday Smile

Yes I am very uncomfortable eating with others due to clumsiness. I have to concentrate and be very careful.

Thanks for the birthday wishes Smile

Happy Birthday! mine is friday.

I know how you feel about this.

Last year at my job, we had a new manager and he insisted on bringing people into the main office on their birthdays and making them stand up in front of everyone, and wishing them a happy birthday (can't remember if they sang to me?) It was irritating. Then for everyones anniversary, same thing (mine was a week or two later.) What is so annoying is that this is seen as some sort of group solidarity thing It is their way of saying, "we like having you around". Whereas for me it was like being put in the spotlight and everyone saying "look how different you are from us." I had recently learned about AS, and so I probably felt more indignant than I would have. I left my job a couple of weeks later.

It just seems so ridiculous. Why should you have to struggle to survive your birthday present?

Thank you and happy early birthday.

I love to share a rant and your job sounds a lot worse than mine. The thing about today was they did it to be special for me - they don't always do this.

Give yourself a pat on the back (for holding up so strongly), and a pat on the stomach (for feeling full and satisfied). That's all I have to say; I'm happy for you.
