Heya, members of WP.

My username is Quatermass (please spell it right, it's not 'Quartermass'). I don't have any nicknames, although some people call me Quater (Quatermass will do fine, though).

Anyhow, seeing as my fellow moderator (or mod) MrMark has posted his own thread about himself and his philosophy as a moderator, I have decided to do the same, with some encouragement from MrMark.

Again, as always, my opinions are my own, and as such do not reflect those of other mods, the admin/owner (Alex Plank) or any other members.

First, let me give you a bit of background. I have been on a number of BBSes before, and this is the first that I have been made a moderator to. However, I had been on WP for nearly a year before I was made a moderator. However, at the time (the early days of certain personages' spamming of WP), my name was put forward for modship by a few other members, but I posted that I did not wish for the status of a moderator. However, on the 13th of March this year, Alex saw fit to make me, along with a number of other members, a moderator. I was very nearly overwhelmed with responsibility at first, but I just got on with it.

I realised what being a mod meant when I was first meant one. To moderate a BBS was to make sure everything was moderate. As MrMark has rightly pointed out, we are primarily (at least at initial contact) an information and support website, where aspies and their parents and carers can go to learn more about Asperger's Syndrome. But as any regular member of WP will tell you, the majority of posts are related to a socialisation element. We are a community. As with any community, there are, well, as the euphemism goes, 'disruptive elements'. Bad behaviour and general nastiness are not confined to the NT population, they are present within every subset of human culture and society.

Regulation is necessary, as there are those who won't rule themselves for the good of all at all. I believe in mediation, most of the time, trying to solve things as quickly and as efficiently as possible, and to as much mutual satisfaction as is possible.

In order to regulate the forums, it is necessary to gain and keep the trust of other members, and to hold yourself as accountable as possible without losing objectivity, or at least keeping some objectivity. I believe that I am a trusted moderator here, and while I may have my moments where I get involved personally in an issue (particularly attacks on Doctor Who Rolling Eyes ), I try to keep events around here as civil as possible.

I also understand that there are many people here that need help in life, and I try to offer a shoulder to lean on. I am not a qualified counsellor, but I have a philosophy in life to try and help others get back on their feet, psychologically speaking.

I will only tolerate those who make others' lives a misery only so far. It is not in our purview to actually ban anyone that does anything but the most explicit spamming and trolling, but I take a very dim view of such behaviour.

If you need my help for a reason, please PM me.

Have a nice day.

Quatermass

PS Just so people know, my name comes from here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bernard_Quatermass

Professor Q, you're on the road to a real professorship now, but don't be a 1950s replica ok? And yes I can take that liberty with your name, I think... (hint: I'm being cheeky in an endearing way, I think Smile )

Quatermass, and his successor, the Doctor, are good role models, thank you very muchly!

Nice to meet you, Quartermast Razz

Seriously though, I do like this idea of Mods posting what they think about their role as Mod etc. It shows respect for the members. Smile

Thanks. But spell my name right, or I'll bore you to death with Doctor Who canonical trivialities, one of the many weapons in my arsenal.

Oh, and Alex? I was just following MrMark's example. If you want them here, then fine.

Agreed that in a discussion forum wherein the majority of participants are seeking ways to improve their relations with the rest of the world, that discussion ought to remain reasoned; civil; pleasant or at least neutral in tone. WP is that rare place where people whose means of expression are otherwise limited may voice their opinions and concerns at length. It would be foolhardy to expect consensus on every issue. In the relatively short time I have been here, though, I've found WP to be refreshingly free of the ad hominem (or if you will ad feminem) argumentation and intimidatory tactics that mar other discussion forums.

In fact, posters seem to go out of their way to avoid giving offence, and are most apologetic when they think they might have done so inadvertently. Except in the Dinosaur Cave where you might encounter a bit of snark... Very Happy

I've never moderated any forums myself, but I imagine that it could seem thankless and exhausting at times. I'm grateful that there are people willing to stick their hand up and take on that role.

Nice to know the origin of your username, Quatermass! From the first paragraph of the Wiki article, I was thinking, "This dude is sooo prototypically Dr Who." Wasn't too far off the mark!

Looking forward to meeting IRL.

What about in Doctor Who? I mean, for example Zoe, Liz or Romana? Or maybe even Martha Jones (she's a medical student) in the new series?

Yes but they aren't the boss, now are they? Would it have been so popular if the Dr was a lassy?

Hmmm....

You know, I honestly don't know the answer to that question.

But you have to remember something, did you know that the first producer of Doctor Who was, in fact, a woman? Verity Lambert...

Ha, ha, very funny. But at least you know the feeling of what it's like to have your username misspelt, eh, KBABZ? Hence the 'KBABZ Awards'.....

Yeah. Back when I was KBABZ on GameFAQs is when it started, but I gave out trophies back then.

Just out of interest, what games did you write FAQs for?
