Hey, this is my first post. Until two days ago, when I found this website and other information about Asperger's, I didn't know what to think about myself. I'm not diagnosed, I'm not even sure I have it, although so far everything is lining up. All that being said...now I'm trying to figure out other things not able to be explained by doctors/friends/family. Here's the first.

Anyone get brain zaps or brain shivers and definitely have Asperger's? The zaps are like electrical shorts/zaps in your brain, it's pretty weird, feels like something is shorting out. Brain shivers are when you feel like you're moving back and forth, or in a direction, but you aren't. It's not vertigo, it's a completely different experience. I've done some research and the only people I could find experiencing this were people going through withdrawals of anti-depressants...which I've never taken in my life. So, the only explanation I've found doesn't apply.

I'm curious to see your responses. Thanks to everyone on this site.

The only thing I've ever experienced that sounds similar were these shooting pains I had in my head right behind my right eye. They started after I began taking Zoloft and lasted about two weeks. It felt like something was misfiring in my brain.

Is this something that happens a lot to you? If so, maybe you should mention it to your doctor.

I had the strange electrical sensations stopping both zoloft and
paxil. I noted it very strongly when I shifted my eyes from side
to side rapidly. What effect does rapid eye movement have on
you?

This it happened to me last week when i was with my mother (a doctor) and she told me the medical term for it, which i cant remember but i think your description of 'shorting out' might be more or less accurate.

Im not on any prescription meds btw, and it doesnt happen to me very often.

Yeah, it's actually not very often. Maybe once every other month or less. It's just one of those things that I'm looking back on saying "I wonder if that's another thing other people on this site might be experiencing".

Welcome to WrongPlanet Image
Some of the sensations you describe sometimes happen to me during hypnagogia when I am about to drift into
sleep I feel like I am falling. I also experience the so-called "silent migraine" in which the visual effects are
present but not the headache and nausea. This may or may not be a subtle form of epilepsy.

I get those sometimes. My head feels like it's floating up and to the left and taking the body with it. I lie down and close my eyes for a few minutes and it goes away. Do you also have light migraine headaches that affect your eyesight?

No, no migraines. It's normally different thoughts that trigger it. I can't think of any examples, but it's normally a "different" thought for me. Something I normally wouldn't think, and I think A LOT. What'll happen is, I'll think the thought, get the "zap", think the thought again, get the zap a little weaker, try to think the thought again, a little weaker zap, then after 3-8 times, the zap is gone and the thought doesn't mean much to me, so I stop thinking it. Again, it's not common, it's rare.

I get brain shivers, all the time. I was wondering how I could feel like I'm rocking back and forth, without doing so.

I get the feeling of motion all the time. I'm not sure what you mean by the other part, so I guess it doesn't happen to me. Although, as a child sometimes everything would get really loud for like a half-second.

Same here for years and had no clue there was a name or anything for it, I used to be on SSRIs from 19 till last year.

Firstly, Welcome to WP! Secondly, I've experienced those before, but I'm not on any anti-depressants, any kind of drugs mess me up, so I only stick to herbal stuff or vitamens. I feel like what you said rocking back and forth and I'm standing still or sitting still, I can never figure out why though. I don't have aspergers though, I have HFA, so I don't know if that makes much of a difference though.

I get zaps when I miss a few days of my Zoloft and get over tired at the same time. It's a zap feeling behind my eyes accompanied by a short hissing sound inside my head. They come in bursts of two or three 'zaps' in rapid succession with the first being strongest. Sometimes the stronger bursts will be followed by a chill going down the back of my neck. When it gets to my back I shudder. I remember getting them before I took antidepressants just from staying up way too late. Is this the same as what everyone else is getting?

The zaps themselves don't bother me, but sometimes I start to feel a little faint and flu’ish at the same time. It's like a very slight lightheadedness and minor aches and chills.

You may have experienced a hypnagogic hallucination, if your just going into sleep or coming out of it anyway. Otherwise Im not sure what could be causing these "zaps".

Yes!! I get these every day, and I was wondering whether or not anyone else here got them. I'll think of something, usually it's when I suddenly remember something I have to do later that day, and I'll get a quick, sharp rigor or shiver that goes all the way down my spine. It lasts about 5 seconds max, and I have them several times a day. It feels like what I assume a mild electric shock would feel like. I'd love to know the exact name for this, and what really causes it. It definitely seems triggered by thoughts, but not necessarily anxious or negative ones.
