I love to run; if you read my thread titled "crosscountry running" (or something like that) you could see who else likes to run. Do you run crosscountry races, or road races? I personally like a little both, and I like running distances like 8k-12k runs. I also like running crosscountry, and mud is fun to run in, and I like variety in terrain (except gravel).

I don't see the point of running. If you're trying to lose fat, then all you need to do is stop eating so much. If you want to build healthy mass, weight-lifting is what you must do. Martial art or gymnastics can build coordination. Running seems mindless and painful.

Eating less is not enough to keep fit and running helps keep you fit. I don't understand why you could be againest running its alot easier the the alturnatives you suggested. And Weight lifting may built healthy body mass but it doesn't give you a cardeovacual work out. Running helps keep you heart rate up and makes you heart stronger. Personally I do these other options you speak of as well as running.

Oh! You mean hyper-ventilate form exhaustion? Used to do that a lot when I was little, quit the nasty habit a few years ago. Wink

I'm going to run with my best friend this evening. I need exercise, I want to be healthy.
I hope I will like it. I'm going to take my MP" player with me.

Edit: I did it! Smile We ran 5 minutes, then walked a little, than again 5 minutes, walked again, and then we ran 10 minutes long. I feel good. I thought I would be tired, but I am not tired at all. We're going to run on thursday again.

That's awesome Fiddler. It's best to start out slow, then raise the amount of time spent running to longer amounts. It's best to run based off of time than distance, just in case you want to know for future reference; so, you're on the right track! Anyways, running is so awesome. I'm in my winter conditioning for track (although I love running crosscountry many times more because of the adventure, and the feeling of going somewhere). It's still running, however. In track, I run the mile (1600 meter) and the 2 mile (3200 meter).

running can improve your performance in other areas, such as weight-lifting*. Its also the most convienient way to implement HIIT (high intensity interval training) which is the most efficient exercise-based principle for fat-burning/time. A 20 min HIIT session can be more effective than hours of jogging, although id have to agree initially it is very painful!

*long cardio sessions (over 1hr) cause a catabolic (muscle eating) hormonal shift, so bodybuilders avoid using them.

In crosscountry and track, we run intervals, fartleks, 150's, and other speed workouts a few times a week to improve our speed and footwork for a race. But, for winter conditioning or to keep in shape, it's best to run long so that there's blood still flowing through your muscles, so that you body wouldn't have to recreate the passage ways (or veins) to the muscles all over again (or where you were at the end of the crosscountry or track season). But, speed workouts are still very important; fartleks are especially important. My coaches tell me that it's not the running part that's most important between intervals but the resting portion, which is interesting to me. It still hurts either way, however!

I am trying to get into shape so I can run in our Med City Marathon in May. We have a four person team so each of us only has to run 6.5 miles. Right now I am up to 5.5 but it takes me an hour. I want to get down to a 10 minute mile and not feel like I am going to keel over. I run every other day and circuit train the other days.

Keep in mind please that I haven't done any running for 16 years.
