As a woman in New York City, unfortunately it's different than most places: fashion is extra important and everyone in the city is a member of the fashion police. These are the girl's "rules" I've picked up on to be considered attractive and respected by the NYC society. You must:
1) always be manicured and pedicured (To me it's stupid and a huge waste of money, but guys checking out girls ALWAYS check out the toes almost before looking at the face!) I do my own so at least I'm putting some effort into it, but all the other women can totally tell.
2) be perfectly made up and coiffed
3) dress up, and wear the most uncomfortable 4-inch heels you can find. Even though my work has no dress code, I've discovered that the city does, and jeans are only acceptable on Fridays... and stylish heels are very important (probably mostly to show off stupid pedicures)
4) be essentially totally hairless except for your head hair and heavily tweezed eyebrows (this includes your arms, your legs from toe to butt, a "Brazilian" bikini wax, any and every stray hair on your face, and any hair anywhere else). This part is more of a pain for me than the shoes that make my feet bleed and I don't do it all.
5) be in good shape.
I don't condone these rules and I'm not very good at following them, mostly because they are absurd, a huge waste of money, and not just uncomfortable but often downright painful. I've probably missed some and didn't mention the basics which are the beginning of this thread. |

I DO notice this. Almost always an immediate
sign that 'tis someone I'd be uninterested in.
Seriously, I figure if the best use of someone's
time is to put makeup on their god damned feet,
I want NOTHING to do with them.

Makeup is icky. Hairspray (and mousse) perhaps
more so.

Ok - deal killer right there. That's just gross.
I could live with the toenails, but this is sick.
Crappies, and I was considering moving back
to NYC. |

Many people have commented on the dead animal on my head ! !
I feel sad for him though, I mean he died on my head. It's funny how that happens, one day he's just growing, all happy, then one day... he's dead. I didn't even notice. I've tried to bring myself round to removing him like people persist but I kind of like him, he's warm : ) I bush him up in the mornings to give him some life but he flops down soon enough. Sometimes I give him some life preservative but that just means I gotta wash him more often (hassle!!)
Perhaps I should give him a little trim, pay my respects... |

Labcoats? Do you wear this on the street, or to go shopping? On a date?
That's pretty far out there. |

Does anyone shop in thrift stores?
There are some thrift stores that are over-priced--you're actually better off shopping at Walmart, or at JC Penny's or Sears when they have their end-of-season sales.
But, I also know of a few thrift stores that are great. They have really great expensive-looking name-brand clothing for only a couple of dollars each.
In general, if you go to a thrift store that is in a poor area, then the merchandise is going to be of extremely low quality and extremely over-priced.
If you find a thrift store in a somewhat more upscale area, or that typically receives donations from wealthy people whose style changes every five minutes, then you've hit a goldmine. |

| Yes, fashion is a language. Its one of the most blunt and obvious means of non-verbal communication. However, its actually an exceedingly dishonest language. For years, I have made false judgements about people based on how they dress. Its really quite true, when it comes to attire: you cant judge a book by its cover. People often dress a certain way to make you think they're something that they're not. When it comes to people in their teens and 20s, clothing is often quite pretentious. Ive discovered that a lot of people(or women) who dress in a really flamboyant "alternative"(punk/goth/emo/hipsteretc.) style are not nearly as interesting or creative as their clothes would lead you to believe. Its like they're really ordinary people who want to stand out in a way that makes others think that they're creative and artsy. The most truly creative, oddest, and most unconventional people Ive met derrive their identity through what they do, not how they dress. I often gravitate towards people who I think have a good sense of style, but some friends of mine think that such is very superficial and irrelevant. Clothing isnt nearly as effective for men as it is for women in grabbing the attention of members of the opposite sex. Perhaps it because women arent as visual and arent as fixated on mens appearance than vice versa. |

The guy in the above picture looks "real" to me and if I were free, I'd much prefer someone like him for a boyfriend than some overly perfect "Ken Doll". _________________ Break out you Western girls,

Yes, the stupid rules drive me even more crazy than the people near me on the train every day do. I'm trying an online dating site (in vain - I can't seem to get interested in someone I'm not meeting in person) and half the guys ask questions like "What is your personal sense of style?" and "How much do you work out?" Ugh.
Man, do I miss Silicon Valley! |

Ugh! You don't want superficial guys like that! Is there a way you could move somewhere with more sensible people. I would certainly draw the line at wearing shoes that mutilate my feet and having anything plucked. Brazilian waxes are just sick and I like my eyebrows just the way they are. There must be plenty of people in New York who don't dress to the nines. _________________ Break out you Western girls,

I like to wear an accessory with my outfits that I use as a staple piece. It helps put the outfit together, but still manages to look unique.
For example, my latest thing is hats. If you go to Hot Topic or Torrid, you can find hats there so out of fashion that they're retro, and actually look pretty cool. Something like a 1930's- or '40's-style men's hat with a modern twist. Nobody else you know will be wearing one, so you can still be a nonconformist, but if you choose the right one (bring along a fun-loving NT who gets you if you're not sure) it pulls your outfits together and somehow manages to miraculously work. If those stores aren't exactly your style, try PacSun or Zumez. Or you can go in the opposite direction and get an old-fashioned driving cap or even a beret at Sears or Macy's.
I also like to wear a tie with T-shirts or even muscle tees. No collar to speak of, but I put the tie around my neck and keep it loose.
Of course, it's possible that these methods are really only feasible if you're a teen or twenty-something. I wouldn't know; I'm the only person I know who does this. _________________ Never go down without a fight. |

Please god ditch the hats! There is nothing unsexier than a woman in a fedora. Yeah, a baseball cap with a ponytail out the back is hot, because she still looks like a girl. Men want to see your hair. Very few women can pull off short hair and still be sexy. Might as well just grab a Sharpie and give yourself a mustache.
I do like the muscle tees on women, it shows off the delicate bone structure of the neck and clavicles...mmm.
The tie's a good one, I like that. I had a girl who wore one as a belt; she was also wearing a wifebeater, which is why I liked her enough to talk to her. It said unique, smart, daring and approachable.
A fedora or similarly-brimmed hat says "I sure hope you're a latent homosexual!" or "Post-op tranny" "11 year old Amish Boy"
Women that wear hats:
Six from Blossom
Queen Elisabeth II
Queen Mum (deceased)
Not good company. Seriously, I can't think of any others. There's a reason for this.
Nobody thought giant shoulder pads were sexy in the 80's. Actually, I'm surprised ANYBODY had sex in the 80's. Between the clothes and the coke, I mean, Jesus Christ! I always look at a girl and say, "Damn, if only she had a retarded perm, giant shoulders and a poorly altered man's suit she'd be hot!"
Now, a hand-knit wool cap or a "Russian" style fur hat is niiice, it's soft and feminine and suits your sex.
There's a line between sexy and disturbing and it's drawn at masculinity.
Good for you to try new things though. Most women do what the one next to them does. _________________ A son of fire should be forced to bow to a son of clay? |
