I don't think that you could make personality judgements and say that they are hackers; not all hackers wear black clothing for instance. I would think that a lot of them would wear nerdier clothes. I know some people who say that they hack computers and I don't think that they liked cats much.

Well, I listed the most prevalent factors.

There's an article on the web talking about the relationship between AS and Hacking. Besides that, I am interesting in the Aspergers psychology and the relationship with Computers. I also read an article about the Hacker personality, and it seems that my personality is very much Hacker-like. I am no Hacker, but I have immense creative ability. Here are some reasons to why I believe I have it.

I am not exaggerating nor am I contemplating anything.

- Creative abilities (mostly literature/philosophy/drawing/sculpting

- Wears Black clothing

- Likes cats

- Hates confrontation

- Socially inept

- Listens to Industrial, Electronic musics

- Leader-type person/Egocentric/Egotistical

These are the most significant parts of Hackers.

You missed the the most significant parts of the hacker personality: technical ability, curiosity, and the desire to explore the forbidden! Seriously, some of those items are pretty ridiculous, like "likes cats."

What an "earth" are you talking about? I listed all what you re-listed. And many Hackers have an affection for cats.

None of the descriptions you mentioned were about technical ability, curiosity, or desire to explore the forbidden. The correlation between liking cats and computer hacking may be common, but that's not really an aspect of personality.

Some of your descriptions contradict each other, too. "Hates confrontation" and "Socially inept" aren't really compatible with "Leader-type person." Things like wearing black clothing and preferring industrial/electronic music are a matter of taste and clique membership; they are not core aspects of personality.

Eric S. Raymond has written a bit about the hacker personality for the Jargon File and has noted a craving for novelty is one item. They also tend to be nonconformist and reject convention.

I am not correlating all of the aspects with a person entirely. But the majority of Hackers have brilliant creative abilities.

Yeah, it's interesting. I think Paul Grahm's essay on the topic is pretty insightful into that:

check it out.

Absolutely brilliant. I've read many of his essays, and this one is spot-on.

We have alot of Unix and Linux in our company. I've been running Linux since 1997. We recently bought an IBM compute server - 8 x 3GHz Xeon processors, 64GB RAM, and it runs Linux. Very Happy

That said, corporatewise we're going to an almost completely Windows environment. In order to run email and calendaring, you must either run Windows or you'll get very limited capabilities in those areas.

Follow Paul Graham's essay and you'll see where my company is potentially headed.

Thank you! I'll look at it in the office tomorrow, and pass it on to our division IT folks. They're angry about recent "decisions" too, and are limited as to what they can do. If Zimbra can address our issues, that would be great.

Thanks again!

Is it possible that hackers really don't have a personality at all?
