|
|
When I started taking 20mg per day of prozac 4 weeks ago, I noticed a great reduction of anxiety and felt able to explore my town again.
However, for the last few days I have felt very hazy and been autopiloting more than normal working with my instincts which suck big time!
I have also suffered with priapism for the first time in my life and because of my autopilot communication, have been telling people about it in far too much detail, including how i tried to releave the situation.

I feel VERY embarassed about this and scared to go out incase i insult or offend anyone.
I'm even more scared about being seen when the priapism strikes, what if i'm near kids at the time, if any angry dads saw it they may (wrongly) think I'm a paedophile and beat me up in the street.
any help or advice gladly recieved.
Thanks. _________________ "You are very funny! you talk, but all i hear is silliness!" -Cat Face. |

Prozac is one of those medications that takes a while to kick in. If it works, you'll know within two to six weeks. What I think you're experiencing is a strong placebo effect; namely, your body will take any excuse to get better, and the idea that you are taking medication that may help you improve is enough that you actually improve. Sometimes the effect is temporary. I had it when I started on Zoloft; it was temporary for me. Most likely it is temporary for you, too. I think it's generally a good sign to see a placebo response though because it means improvement is possible. Maybe not on Prozac, if it puts you on autopilot that much; but some other medication may work to help your anxiety.
About the other thing... hmm... wear loose pants and/or long shirt? The guys on here can probably give you advice on that one better than I can. I can see how that would be rather embarrassing, though. I kind of doubt you'd be beaten up. For all they know you've just been thinking about your girlfriend or something. _________________ Engineering student. Gamer. Christian. Asexual. Information Addict. Deal with it!

(sorry for the double post, this PSP browser sucks)
Thanks but the reason I don't think it's a placebo effect is because this is my 7th or 8th different antidepressant, including other ssri meds and they didn't do anything apart from side effects, mostly tiredness and lack of appetite but some make my lifelong hand tremors much worse, to the point where sometimes i coudn't even pick up a glass of water without shaking out the contents.
With the prozac it feels like i'm turning into a zombie. _________________ "You are very funny! you talk, but all i hear is silliness!" -Cat Face. |

| When the dose of my anti-depressive was increased the first effect I noticed was also a reduction of anxiety (in fact I felt very calm). My psychiatrist told me that first I would feel less anxious and with less angst then only after that the "anti-depressive" effect (better mood, increased energy) would kick-in. He said the anti-depressive worked that way (I don't know if all of them work that way). |

I meant to say that i think the biggest contributer to my depression is my anxiety.
I have been given diazepam for this in the past but it didn't work.
maybe i should just ask about anti-anxity meds? _________________ "You are very funny! you talk, but all i hear is silliness!" -Cat Face. |

Justin6378,
You might want to consider the possibility that 20mg. is simply too high a dose for you to be taking. It sounds like you might be over-medicated. Discuss your experience with your prescribing doctor: since you had some good response to this medication earlier on, before the medication fully kicked in, and you haven't had as good a response to other medications you've tried, reducing the dosage might be a good first step, rather than just switching to a different medication. |

Most of the GPs at my surgery make me feel uncomfortable with the way they talk to me and ask questions, which usualy leaves me unable to talk properly resulting in quiet brief yes and no answers, hand wringing and staring at the floor.
I think they just want to get rid of me by picking another random med off a list.
The only doctor there i can talk to i think currently only works part time because of her young child, so i hope i can find out when she works and beat the others who want to see her. _________________ "You are very funny! you talk, but all i hear is silliness!" -Cat Face. |

| Definitely try to get the doctor you feel more comfortable with, and if you're worried about being able to express your concerns when speaking to the doctor, try to write it all down ahead of time, and print it out and bring it with you. If you can express yourself in speech, perhaps handing the doctor a written explanation will help describe things in a way that the doctor will understand, and will at least give you a better starting point for the questions the doctor will need to ask. |

Thanks jat!
unfortunatly my printer is broken, it "fell" off the desk, and my handwriting is awefull, my 6 year old nephew writes nearly as well as me!
I will try though and hope she can read it incase i can't say what I want to.
I'm sure my anxiety has made my speach much worse and the fear of embarassment seems to have brough it back. _________________ "You are very funny! you talk, but all i hear is silliness!" -Cat Face. |

| Gotta hate when that happens! If you know someone who would let you use their printer, you can email yourself what you want to say (in an attached word document, for instance), and then you can open it from any computer with internet access and a printer, so you can print it - or put it on a flash drive if you have one, and take it with you to the printer. Good luck! |

I asked the Psychiatrist on the phone if I could email her my "speech" because I don't have a printer, and she was glad to give me her email address.
Justin, in any case, you must see a doctor about these effects. One more thing you can do: there are online support forums for people taking Prozac (including the Prozac laboratory ones), and they're extremely supportive. Their experts (of the lab forums) also give authorized advice by PM on their forums.
I'm starting today with double dose: 20mg of my anti-depressant, after 2 years on 10mg, and I'm a bit apprehensive myself. I spent a week on 15mg as per the doctor's instructions. _________________ So-called white lies are like fake jewelry. Thanks Greentea!
I may just ask if I can take my "speach" in on a USB stick.
BTW, good luck with your meds x
