The fact that one day, through genetic engineering, normal people would be gradually replaced by perfect ones. Humans that don't need to eat or sleep as much, get their education faster and have an unnaturally high pain threshold, making them nearly indestructible. Eventually, given their enhanced mental functions, these perfect humans would eventually see us as a liability. Think about the future shown in The Terminator, but without the cyborgs.

Just pray they don't build a time machine.

Nonsense. Genetic engineering is simply not that powerful, while there would certainly be useful enhancements around, it is very probable that the right approach would be to use somatic treatments that could be practically used by everyone.

If it comes to that, just get yourself upgraded, and you'll be just fine!

Cool

"perfect" for what? perfectly suited for earth? earth's getting a little stale for that. once we start stepping out our front door and moving out of our parents' neighborhood, we'll find plenty of space for competing views of "perfect." "natural humans" will surely be preserved in some way as a type of save point for humanity.

...kinda like the amish are now.

Interesting movie. Besides any motion picture with Uma Thurman cannot be all bad.

I for one welcome humanity 2.0. Seriously, what is so good about the current version?

@TOGGI: Gattaca was a tale of sabotage, nothing more. The astronaut could not perform the physical examinations within the required parameters thus he cheated. This might be okay for a job here on earth, but not in a multi-billion USD project when lifes depend on you. Rolling Eyes

I think human are far too short sighted for genetic engineering. If gene alteration really become possible, everyone with the resources to do so will want to get all the best genes in their view. This may seem beneficial at first, but in the end it will just reduce the gene pool of our specie. Utlimately some catastrophe that we could have survive would just wipe us out. Not to mention that it will also hinder our evolution because genes seen as unfavorable will be eliminated even though they may evolve into something else.

Most people don't with that one. It's just a misconception I find rather annoying.

A good movies as far as movies go. But, you should try to remember that it was made like a classical SF work - it explores only one idea. These days things are getting too complicated, and you can't get anything resembling a large picture from something like that.

I find that unlikely, so far the fastest changes in nature and in human condition happen because of human intervention, not by natural sources.

I go both ways. The reverse direction is often referred to as "confabulation", but it works for me.
