I know MP3 is popular, but my personal preference is OGG. I use the OGG Codec that comes with K-Lite Codec Pack (I think CoreVorbis?), I encode all my HDD music in that format as I find it has equal quality for less file-size compared to MP3.

FLAC, from the same organization responsible for OGG. It's a lossless format, so it is higher quality, though you pay a premium in disc space to store it.

EDIT: The MP3 patent expires next year. I bet Fedora will bundle MP3 support in Fedora 13.

You mean you like the OGG Container with the Vorbis codec Smile

I generally stick with VBR MP3 192 minimal 256 max, since its compatible with everything out there.

I do like vorbis alot though.

I've used Ogg Vorbis since right before version 1 was completed (about mid 2002). Currently if I rip one of the families CDs that is damaged and I have difficulty getting a good rip, I'll save a lossless FLAC copy. In the future when I have a bit more drive space available I'll keep a copy of all of them in FLAC as well as in Ogg Vorbis (to use on our portable players).

As far as quality level, I keep that set at 6, which has an ABR of 192.
