Yeah, I don't watch them for a variety of reasons. Slasher and gore films are completely out. I have the sort of thinking when watching a movie that makes me tend to suspend my disbelief, even going so far as to iron out any wrinkles in the plot by designing the missing elements in my mind. If, say, there were plot holes, I'd fill them in. I am a writer, so there's that. I also fill in things deliberately concealed. If the lake monster kills the victim in a cheesy fashion by cramming his face into a tree trunk, all it takes is a foley of crunchy noises to make me feel queasy. That is a real one, by the way, a particularly stupid movie called "Rana: The Legend of Shadow Lake." I knew it was stupid and still it made me feel ill. I even find myself wondering what it feels like! I hate it, but that has been my experience so I have learned to be very selective. I also find that the images become mine to cherish forever. I still find myself dwelling upon dark things I have seen, or even heard, and feeling like clawing at my head as if to tear them out.

And what's more, I have the frustrating tendency to feel hounded and hunted anytime I feel pressure from pushy people... tailgaters, salesmen, even impatient relatives can make me feel like I'm under attack. So now consider a show that is designed to make me feel for the terrified, scrambling, hunted victim. Not a good idea. I do like to choose carefully crafted spooky films, ones made for kids or with suspense or stylized action or comedy or just an odd premise, but very mild for fear... The Abominable Dr. Phibes, Wait Until Dark, The Watcher in the woods, Arsenic and Old Lace.

And finally, I have learned in recent years what most people do... that there is real terror out among human beings. Knowing what true horror exists sort of take all the fun out of a spooky tale. Ho hum.

I don't watch them because they are boring and unrealistic and they always follow the same formula. It spoils the film when all I'm thinking about is how predictable it all is and how unrealistic it is that someone is smashing through glass without one scratch and things like that. I have never found horror's scary, the only really good ones I've seen are "gothika" and "the others".
