Yes, either that or "What's wrong with you?" The problem with the latter is that even though I may not be in a bad mood, being asked that question puts me in a bad mood, so it becomes sort of a self-fulfilling prophesy (though it's not really a prophesy, it's just a statement...you know what I mean). And I can grin, but the sight of an actual smile on my face exists in the gray area between goofy and frightening.
However, I do get people who think I look serene; that always makes me happy.

Yeah, apparently my default expression is a mixture of scary, angry, and sad.
I'm also pretty much incapable of smiling at or making eye contact with other men at all... _________________ Come on monsters, you don't have to cry... we can be HAPPY !!!

i get this all the time and it's never people who know me. nope, random strangers on the street will come up to me and ask "why are you sad," "what's wrong?" "come on, smile!" and "it can't be that bad."
usually this happens when i'm not sad. i feel like telling them that my mother just died or something. maybe then they'll stop making assumptions. for all they know i have just cause to be sad. _________________ "Life can be very confusing...filled with good things and filled with bad things. This happened when I was in high school. Maybe at work in Montana too but I don't remember. I do remember getting asked what is wrong and it was annoying. _________________ I'm a Peach

yeah. smile. gah.
When someone told me that I'd try then they
would tell me it looks fake or like a scowl,
so I made a hate face on purpose and they
said "Now, your not even trying." and I
said "I know, I give up."
give me a valid reason to smile and I will.
make me happy. |

neither do I; unless I'm doing an intentionally idiotic looking smile, I look terrible being photographed.
My mom and I both had/have respectively this psychotic look to our smiles. My Dad's one of those guys who just doesn't want to be bothered with almost anything...ever...and you can tell.
I'm not a big smiler; my expression is usually quite neutral; I smile a bit when I've picked up on something, and realized it's really, really good. |

| Absolutely! And it pisses me off to no end. "Aaron, smile more, you'll be happier." I mean, WTF? I'm not unhappy, this is my normal expressions. I swear, some NTs are just so ignorant! |

It happens to me all the time. Just yesterday some guy just randomly told me to smile while I was walking to my car in the college parking lot. And I even thought I was smiling at the time. WTF? _________________ ~*Jen*~

My wife/ fam. have commented occasionally on this about me.
Even though I do laugh a lot on the inside ; I've been told to cheer up or smile (esp. when people were at more liberty to do so in my younger years)
Ive heard this comment more than a few "he's just smiling on the inside then." _________________ Every day is my first day on earth |

Smiley Gyrus topic
When I was younger. Now that I am way past middle age, people think I will mirror a smile if they "show" me. This does not work. I just do "eyeflash", like a baboon. _________________ Radical Aspergian

And even worse: It is fake.
I think photos from way back in time look a lot better - people stood there without clowning around, looking towards the camera waiting for it to take their picture, looking serious or neutral.
Smiling because a camera points towards you - ridiculous.
