| I think Australia just has a much better detection and treatment system as well as socialized healthcare. In comparison, detecting special needs individuals through the education system and health system in the USA seems to be very problematic. A child of a lower income familly, going to an underfunded school, can slip through the system easily. If their issues are recognized, then they still may not receive proper treatment if treatment is required beyond the classroom setting. |

That would be difficult to determine. It's certainly enough of a problem there to have convinced the Australian government to investigate the incident rate and adopt a plan of action. I think they are far more advanced than the USA and offer more and better services. And of course, they have Doctor Attwood on their side.
Here is their official site:
Autism Australia
THis comes from another source and is from 2001. It's interesting but not necessarily accurate as it is the extrapolated rate based on population andworldwide incident rate available in 2001
Autism in Oceania (Extrapolated Statistics)
Australia 39,826 WARNING! (Details) 19,913,1442
New Zealand 7,987 WARNING! (Details) 3,993,8172
Papua New Guinea 10,840 WARNING! (Details) 5,420,2802
Full extrapolated report:
Extrapolated Prevalance of Autism Worldwide
I'm certain there are people on this board better equipped to speak about this than me. Danielsmyname and Callista perhaps. _________________ "I want to show that the dividing lines between sanity and mental illness have been drawn in the wrong place. It could just be that there are more Australian Aspies online than others. Speaking as someone who knows of many, many Aspies over here in the States. _________________ “Evil? No. Cursed?! No. COATED IN CHOCOLATE?! Perhaps. At one time. But NO LONGER.” |

The folks from down under do seem to be disproportionately represented here on WP. However, I would imagine this is pure coincidence. Like Aurore said, we're everywhere. Heck, at one point, there were 4 of us living in my house (split between two separate apartments). _________________ ... leave me alone, and I should relish every hour and what it brought me...

There do seem to be a lot of Americans here too, but that isn't surprising with 300m people living there. _________________ Now then, tell me. What did Miggs say to you? Multiple Miggs in the next cell. He hissed at you. What did he say?

There sort of is.
We have fantastic doctors/mental health professionals.
And of course, the Tony Attwood debacle. In his effort to make a name for himself he diagnosed every man, woman, child and their dog with AS and got many others in the field to do the same. There are alot of 'Attwood Aspies' out there, they may have AS, but they may just be a tool and misdiagnosed for selfish reasons. It worked, he is now considered the god of AS, the downside, the condition is pretty much a joke from outside perspective because of the over-diagnosing and 'add-style' hype. |

It may be problematic, but not for the reasons you're lead to believe. As the old saying goes: "Believe nothing of what you hear, and only half of what you see."
I'd get into it further, but I don't think that's the point of this thread. |

Australia is a bigger country than the US and certainly a lot bigger than the UK. It seems logical that they would have a higher proportion of people with Austic Spectrum Disorders. _________________ I'm an army of one... The man with the gun.

Um, Australia is the 6th largest country in the world with a population of 22 million.
The US is the 4th largest country with a population of 307 million.
And the UK is 3x bigger in terms of population than Australia with 61 million.
