| Does anyone know of a good site where you can look up a career by title, see what the job entails, and see in general what you'd need to work on or have skills in to do well at that job? It's bugging me that I'm looking at all these jobs online but something like accounts receivable or accounts payable, I'm seriously thinking about doing that for a while but I have absolutely no idea what the routine's all about, how much I have to do with respect to the job overall, whether or not it's something that needs to be speed-dialed in like a data entry position, and even last fall when I was trying to figure out where I wanted to go I still couldn't find anything online that gave me any kind of feel for what I'd be getting into. IMO, kinda stupid that they have people going into these jobs the first time practically blind, not really knowing what they should be prepared for, and expecting them to catch on - you at least think there'd be some resources out there for the slow-learners who want to actually prime themselves a bit beforehand so that they can do well... |

Have you tried a simple Google?
I use a site called Prospects. Although aimed at graduates in the UK, it matches jobs to your profile and gives you a description of what each job is and what kind of skills they are looking for.
Im sure you can search any type of job, check it out www.prospects.ac.uk |

Yeah, nothing but either job offers or accounting software ads.

| btw, as I've looked at more and more local job boards I'm seeing where some of them are doing a good job of spelling that out, that's been pretty helpful as well. |

Hi,
The Us department of labor put up a good site ... Just look up the job and it tells you what it is, what skills you need what most people who do the job enjoy, etc.

I did a google search for "career descriptions" and this was the 2nd link:

It's not actually a listing of careers, but an index site that lists other career sites that you can search.

| Yeah, though I think the local career board site my mom sent me a link to had probably the best definition of what AR/AP positions are. As for the government labor statistics page, it looked like information on accounting jobs was all mashed together like in a lot of other places. Oh well, I know what I need to, hopefully Robert Half is gonna come through for me pretty soon here. |

There used to be a very interesting program run by the Canadian government when I was in high school in the 80's. It was pre-internet, so we would dial in to a mainframe somewhere using a teletype machine. The program would ask a bunch of generic questions to determine what our priorities were (money vs. comfort vs. stability, etc.), and then ask questions about our likes and dislikes (indoor vs. outdoor, groups vs. solitude, etc.), weighing each against our priorities. It could then produce a list of the dozen careers that had characteristics that best matched our weighted preferences.
