Sorry for the bump, but this is pretty much the only thread in this section that I really can say anything about.

I don't believe all humans are sadistic, but I believe a lot are - perhaps most. What they did to me in high school taught me that. Seeing Encyclopaedia Dramatica when I was 14 taught me that. Perhaps I'm one of the few human beings who isn't sadistic. I generally don't laugh at the misfortunes of others. Part of why I am on this site altogether is to find other non-sadistic people.

Of course it is. If people were not all naturally sadistic, the cartoon industry would never exist. We would feel too bad about seeing terrible things happen to Wile E Coyote.

The entire human race isn't sadistic, though any person can end up being sadistic in the right circumstances. Milgram's experiment didn't show this, it showed people would follow authority and hurt someone, not neccessarily enjoy it. The Stanford prison study shows certain situations create sadistic social roles emergently, not that people spontaneoously become sadistic when left to themselves.

Most of the rest of the examples given are from tv and shows of sorts. These can be cathertic, and are usually very salient. A lot of it is shock value, that attracts wonder and disgust. But it's all a show. If you broaden the term from pleasure from inflicting pain on others to simply pleasure from the pain of others I feel you lose the meaning of the word, and so can attribute it to the whole human race.

I don't feel bad shooting people in the head in fps games, nobody really gets hurt :)

Well that means you are a good person, but it doesn't mean you are not sadistic. You are a good person who understands the moral difference between a first person shooter and a real massacre. However even laughing at the pain of pretend characters on the screen is still sadism. You are still laughing at the expense of another person/thing, even if they are not real. I had mentioned above the example of The Road Runner. Even laughing at something where the character doesn't feel any physical pain or psychological harm is still sadistic. The difference is that those are characters made to make people laugh, (watch who framed roger rabbit). There are people who will go further and harm real people for a laugh as well and its terrible that they do, but that is the difference between a good and bad person, moral boundries.

You appear to be leaving both inflicting pain on others (and pleasure from the pain of others) to inflicting pain on that which is not real with intent. I don't think imaginary or fictional recievers of pain count. This seems to be broadening the term to encompass everyone. It's like saying the whole world is masochistic because everyone has owned up to doing something wrong at some point in their lives and subsequently been punished,; it'd render the word pointless.

We are scum. We enjoy seeing someone fall on their ass or get a pie in the face.

Look at Eastern Europe. They had several generations of Communist upbringing telling them that all men are brothers.

The moment it finished they said "Now where were we before we were interrupted?" Oh, yes, "kill the Muslims", "kill the Christians"

So they did.

The entire human race is composed by living beings, who need to fight for survival.

Sadism seems a natural tendency when you?re desperate to prove you?re stronger than someone else.

The notion that the human race is sadistic or evil is a common misanthropic illusory idea of folks who are bullied by folks, who were also bullied, commonly associated with domestic violence and sexual abuse as well.

But no, not factual as even our closest primate cousin the Bonobo who shares a similar empathy gene and empathy related brain structures lives in relative harmony and peace with free loving ways as opposed to the Chimpanzee who still rapes and pillages with the other version of mind.

People can become like Chimpanzees IN THIS WAY, WHEN the cultural social environment is abusive and particularly WHEN the parental environment is non-nurturing and or abusive in the first couple of years in life.

BUT humans are born, overall, like peaceful free loving Bonobos and that's just a scientific fact, now that science has caught up to the teachings of the historical men Jesus AND BUDDHA per the golden rule of living TRUE TO MOTHER NATURE TRUE, AKA GOD, TOO, IN PEACEFUL LOVING WAYS OF SHARING AND COOPERATION.

Conversely yes, instead of collecting goods of subsistence and dominating others through subjugation with tools of illusory cultural fears AND repression and oppression of GOD given human nature, particularly the free expression of full pro-social emotion, sexuality, and practice of reproductive freedom.

But that is culture and or religion designed as nurture, not nature as evolved by GOD.

There is no escaping Mother Nature, except for 'fools', and no, not the kind of fool that plays the 'Tarot Card of Fool', as that is the highest of human being who directs their destiny with relative free will, and a topic perhaps for later with those with eyes that can see more than skin deep.
