Asperger's Mansions
Meerkats are horrible pets. They go insane if kept alone and need constant social stimulation, they'll ruin your house, give you nasty bites, have trouble breeding in captivity (most of the babies die), and they're illegal to keep as pets, so you can kiss your dream of having pet meerkats goodbye. Oh yeah, and sometimes they kill each other's babies. I hope you like baby meerkat corpses lying around your dream home.

OK, yes, that plus the laboratory. Do not forget the fainting couch.
About meerkats....that's discouraging news (@Delirium) but, on the upside, it's a dream so we can imagine the virtual meerkats will be happy in their own fancy and suitable biome. I say, bring on the meerkats

Read the book Walden Two.
I think they have most of the bugs worked out.
It's a 'community' setting, where they share 'work credits' and have figured out how to make a place run with minimal actual work from each person. Could conceivably work in a mansion variation.

First of all, you can't even have a pet meerkat in the United States unless you have the proper permits and licenses. Secondly, most meerkats that are kept as pets were taken illegally from the wild. If you really care about meerkats, you'd leave them alone.
Oh, and read the articles linked on this page.

Has anyone added my son's pacing room yet? Very long, no obstacles of any sort in the middle, but maybe some padded goodies at the ends for climbing, banging, or just fidgeting.

Wow, I used to pace up and down a long hallway, banging my fist repetitiously against the wall as I went, in a group home when I was 15 years old. I don't often remember it. I guess the staff didn't love me for that. It's hard when you can't talk and there's an awful lot that needs talking about, and they made a real big deal when I finally said something. I was surprised and never thought of or noticed myself.
DW_a_mom, I was under the impression that we'd be pacing in every room anyway. All through the house. Far more fun to wander into other people's bedrooms to stim with their nightstands along the way.

I don't think I would have trouble getting permits but anyway I plan to move to the UK or South Africa in the future anyway and have at least one pet meerkat. I kinda only want one anyway so I can keep with me constantaly and take it EVERYWHERE. I wonder if South African or English service animal laws are as lax as they are in the US. I'll probably be a shut in anyway. The crazy old meerkat lady. There are meerkat breeders in the UK and other countires, and besides if I truely had to get a wild one, I'd get a disabled one that couldn't survive in the wild anyway but could still have a decent quality of life in "captvity". Perhaps I'd start a meerkat rescue. Pet tigers, meerkats, etc. seem so much happier than inprisoned ones at zoos.

While you can have a pet meerkat in England and South Africa, they're still a lot of work. They're highly social and will go insane if they're alone, they'll destroy your house, and they aren't really meant to be domesticated. And you can't feed them regular pet food; they have specific dietary needs.

Its also just plain not good for the animals. Seriously, Punkycat, listen to what Delirium is saying, this is good information. If you really care about meerkats, and other animals, then you would oppose the trade of exotic pets. Meerkats do not belong locked in a cage in someone's living room, they belong in the South African wild, among their own kind.

I live!
I'm guessing most people don't look after them properly but we'll build a sanctuary for them where they'll be free of predators. If they really are that bad I'm sure we could work around it, like put some warning signs around the sanctuary in binary and a fainting couch at the entrance in case LabPet takes a wrong turn while sleepwalking. I'd love to have Meerkats running around. I live in a converted barn so I can be alone, and I'm surrounded by 2 alpacas, 4 goats, 3 chickens, which visit me once a day by tapping on my front door when they're not laying, a rooster which likes to terrorise me by hiding in my garden then suddenly making a noise when I go outside, lots of sheep, 2 lambs run around the garden with the dog cos their mothers rejected them so the dog has adopted them, and a turkey.

Delirium is being a bully. Meerkats are my main special intrest and I think I would be more than qualified to have one of my own.
