I have been unable to find a job. I have a degree in office management, but I'm ill-suited for running an office. I have a computer technician's certification, along with a lot of people. I'm more competent than them, but none of us can get hired. I tried starting a web-based business, it failed.
I tried repairing computers, there's too much supply and not enough demand. I thought of repairing iPhones, but I simply don't have the fine motor coordination to work with those tiny parts. Somebody on another forum suggested I be a programmer, but there's no demand for American programmers-all programming is done overseas, or by imported foreigners. I'm out of options.
I can't be a car mechanic (what my grandfather did)-there's a surplus of those, and the only schools that still teach it are scam-artist for-profit schools. I can't design things, I'm not an artist type, and besides if I was I'd be even worse off. There's nothing left. What do I do, since I can't work fast food? Live off SSI until it's cut off due to budget cuts, then kill people until they throw my butt in prison, where at least I'd have meals and a place to sleep?
I'm almost 37 and half my life is gone. There's nothing I can do, there's nothing left to do, America has been gutted by Wall Street and has been left to die. Anyone for some Soylent Green? I'll barbecue... |

Well, car mechanic if you're creative is good. You'd have to do something really specialized and niche. Like, I hope to make parts for Celica Supras for example. If you're good with something really specialized and niche, then you can demand as much money as you'd like for your services. A big example would be if you have a shop that specializes in, say, old Mercedes or BMWs, and can keep them working for cheap. For getting certified for car mechanic, though, ASE certification, no school required. You can just study for the tests and take them at like $50 each or so, I plan to do that. To get ASE certified after the tests, you need 2 years work experience, only thing tech school does is, the certification counts you toward one year work experience. That's all. So, auto mechanic, you know, if you're self motivated enough, you're good.
I don't know, just a thought. One thing, though, the whole western world is just as lost as you are. Everyone's f****. And, what's happening now is, as a young person, I find it idiotic to work toward my parent's goals of a good life, knowing that just around the corner, all currency will be useless anyway. I figure just do what makes you happy. Worst case scenario, I'll just live in a tent in the woods. Whatever. _________________ Too kawaii to live...

Yeah, that's what I think. Car mechanic is really out of the question, since it costs tons of cash to start up your own shop (I'm in California, and most of that is environmental regulations) and if I had tons of cash I'd buy some land and raise my own food. Believe me, there's a car repair place for every niche you can think of here. I'm thinking of putting a bigger, better ad in the yellow pages for my so-far-nonexistent computer business. I had an ad for 2011 but it got no response. I talked the sales droid down to $25/mo, for a $180/mo ad value. If it doesn't work next year, I'm gonna say screw it. The thing is, I've got debts from all this stuff that bankruptcy didn't erase, and I've gotta pay those debts before I can move or do anything, even get another car. |

lol, People's Republic of Kalifornia, huh? Harsh.
Land, if you don't care about location, can be quite cheap. I found 2 house plots in Maine for $5000 for both, however, it was on the border with New Brunswick, one grocery store in the entire town, 1500 people in the entire town, 1/3 spoke French. Stuff like that is cheap, though. You'd have to learn to cook and eat lots of rice and legumes and boring stuff like that. Good news, you'd be probably the only computer guy in miles there, haha. I've also thought of making a cargo container house, too. Google that if you want some fun. I figured if I can't afford to fabricate a cargo container house, I could get a popup trailer for like $500, park it somewhere, live there. I met a guy, sort of a "spiritual" kind of guy, hippie dude, sorta, but very smart. He lived in a VW Vanagon, no job, just lived in a VW Vanagon, and sold his books of poems and songs to people for spare money for what he wanted. He seemed happy enough to me. I'm just thinking, I could do something akin to that if all else fails. Ever hear of "freeganism" just finding stuff in the trash? I love doing that. I've found so much stuff just in the trash, pretty much everything I need is there. People run, run, run, after everything in life, when in time, you'll just get stuff eventually. That's what it seems like to me. I could be extremely lucky or blessed by God or something, too. I remember, I got a job, I made like $200, I was ready to spend that on skates, but I got a pair of nice skates, used, but looking never really used, for $60, that was much better than the pair I was going to get originally.

I really like this quote, it's comforting to me, and it's something I feel God's delivered quite well. _________________ Too kawaii to live...

Welcome to my world. I live this fear every day. I've somehow managed to hang on to my job but my spidey-senses tell me that is going away soon. Just as my spidey senses told me my roommate was about to ditch me. I have no spouse to help with things, no kids to look after me, a ton of debt from a worthless degree and a mortgage too. If I lose my job I lose my house, and I've already begun planning what to do then. I'm not going to die of heart disease (family genetics) in the streets, alone and cold. f**k that. I'm not sure I can start killing people though I can see where others see that as giving some "meaning" in their final days. Jail scares the sh** out of me. Another place I do not intend on winding up.
Death. Gonna happen sometime. Nobody wants me. Well they all like to talk about how they love me, but that's just their own guilty conscience talking. When push comes to shove they will shove me off a cliff without thinking twice. That's how it's been all my f***ing llife.
But in your case, I hope death is not anytime soon. Not sure how helpful that is. Especailly coming from someone who deeply understands where you are coming from.
I am afraid to have any hope anymore, but the protests at least seem kind of interesting. I'm afraid to put any emotional stock in those things because we all know nothingis going to come of them.
sorry i wasn't much more help. _________________ MBTI: INFP

| Well california is somewhat sunny, I suppose. If you could, try something in green technology, everyone is starting to buy into the eco-friendly stuff so it is something that may be good to get into. Well besides that idk, maybe just find random jobs. |

What's so bad about SSI? I mean i don't leave the house anyway so I have no demand for money and the SSI is in my parents' names so it takes care of the cost of food/clothing/shelter.
Call me pessimistic, but I came to the conclusion that I didn't have any talents or abilities that I could make a good income off of, and wouldn't be able to handle the people interaction in most jobs anyway from my experiences with jobs. One of the good points of my life is that I don't have to be out there with "them." |
